RE3 is a recycling campaign developed by the N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance to create awareness and participation in recycling. The City of Salisbury acknowledges and sincerely thanks DENR, the NC Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance and Ms. Kelley Dennings for their continuous support. Certain portions of this booklet and recycling facts and figures were provided courtesy of the NC DENR. Reduce By recycling, you reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills Reuse By recycling, you allow old items to be regenerated into new items while saving precious energy and our earth's natural resources Jobs and helps boost our economy! 2
Citizens of Salisbury, My name is Brian Moore and I am pleased to support the City of Salisbury s Recycling Program through my position as Sanitation Supervisor in the City of Salisbury s Public Services Division. Did you know that in 1994, our state had 36 recycling companies. In 24, we had 532 recycling businesses in North Carolina, a 74 percent rise in only 1 years. That means more materials are being recovered, more jobs are being created, and more money is flowing through our North Carolina economy - all because of recycling! So when you recycle, remember, you re not only reducing landfill waste and protecting the environment, you re supporting your friends, families and neighbors by supporting the North Carolina economy. Let me be the very first person to say to you, Thanks for recycling in Salisbury. If I can assist you with recycling information, please call

So you re wondering-what does recycling have to do with me? Turns out, it s all about you, your home and the good stuff you deserve. Here are the ins and outs of recycling. Recycling s about the economy: Industries in the United States need recycled materials now more than ever. In fact, they are counting on those supplies to expand. There are around 53 recycling businesses in North Carolina employing more than 14, people. That s a lot of jobs! If all of those recycling people make an average of $25,O/year, that means recycling creates a $325 million payroll for North Carolina each year. In tum, that money goes back into the North Carolina economy through purchases, home buying, savings in local W banks and tax payments. A 2 percent increase in recycling would create as many as 5 new jobs in this state. And you know the drill - more jobs mean more money and a stronger economy for North Carolina. 6
Recycling s about smart use of your tax money: Your city taxes pay for things like trash and recycling pickupldrop off. By implementing recycling programs, local govemments are making an investment on your behalf, in a public service that has economic and environmental benefits for our society. The more homes in your community that participate in recycling, the higher the possible dividends delivered by your local govemment to your community! 7
I Recycling s about the environment: You know recycling is good for the environment, but here are the facts! Energy Savings, for example:.recycling an aluminum can saves 95 percent of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from new materials..producing new plastic from recycled material uses only twothirds of the energy required to manufacture it from raw materials..producing glass from new materials requires 3 percent more energy than producing it from crushed, used glass..producing recycled paper requires about 6 percent of the energy used to make paper from virgin wood pulp. It s all about saving Energy any way we can!
Resource savings, for example: One ton of uncoated new (non-recycled) printing and office paper uses 24 trees. That's a lot of trees! Every ton of steel recycled saves 2,5 pounds of iron ore, 1,4 pounds of coal and 12 pounds of limestone. Prevention of emissions/ pollution, for example: Producing recycled paper causes 74 percent less air pollution and 35 percent less water pollution than producing virgin paper. The pollutants created in producing one ton of aluminum include 3,29 pounds of red mud, 2,9 pounds of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas), 81 pounds of air pollutants and 789 pounds of solid wastes. Recycling one ton of steel reduces air pollution by 86 percent and water pollution by 76 percent, and saves 74 percent of the energy and 4 percent of the water that would have otherwise been used. 9
And what about North Carolina s environment? Climate change -the term global warming makes us think about the whole planet, but sea level rises and more frequent and stronger hurricanes should make climate change a big deal for all North Carolinians. You know that waste reduction saves energy and resources, but did you know that it could also slow the accumulation of greenhouse gases? Air quality -Among the many strategies to improve air quality, recycling has a strong role to play. Recycling helps lower emissions of pollutionforming gases and lowers the amount of methane that landfills have to burn off. Also, using more discarded paper to make new paper allows the trees left standing to do their job cleaning the air. Trees - Speaking of which, recycling paper has long been touted as a saver of trees. Even if you re not a tree hugger, you can see that the fewer we use for making paper leaves more for other, higher-value products, such as lumber. IO
"It's just one little can. One little can can't change the world." Ever heard that? Makes you just shake your head, doesn't it? That one little can is energy, water, pollution savings, jobs and more money for your home state to spruce up, perk up and stand up. It's not what it can't do, but what it can do... FOR YOU! All over the state, people just like you are employed, pay taxes, spend money and invest in their communities thanks to recycling. The stuff you recycle means that 14, North Carolinians have a job and that means money for the economy. All North Carolina's urban areas have gross air. It's a proven fact according to the American Lung Association's State of the Air Report. Gross air means climate change, asthma and red level alert days. Guess what the #I thing you can do to help curb climate change? You got it! Reduce, reuse, recycle. No joke. Recycling helps lower emissions of smog-forming gases; but what it means is clean air, a cool planet and a nice enjoyable trip to the park!

North Carolina Recycling Facts (continued) North Carolinians throw away more than $2 million in aluminum cans each year. tion. You can help report herbigs by reporting the license plate of a car and the date and location of an incident to the DOT. Forms can be obtained by calling (8) or reports can be made here. Ultimately, the major industrial sectors would suffer severe difficulties if the supply of recycled materials suddenly disappeared. In 1994, our state had 36 recycling companies. In 24, we had 532 recycling businesses in North Carolina, a 74 percent rise in only 1 years. That means more materials are being recovered, more jobs are being created, and more money is flowing through our economy - all because of recycling! A 2 percent increase in recycling would create as many as 5 new jobs, according to information from the 1994 study. North Carolina recycles 26 percent of its waste stream, composts 6 percent, sends 67 percent to landfills and incinerates 1 percent. North Carolinians throw away enough trash to fill Dumpsters from Boone to Bald Head every 47 days. *Unless stated, all NC facts are from DPPEA or DENR 23 data. 13
