1 SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE SHARI - LYNN MILEY SMILEY@SHEBOYGAN.K12.WI.US Course Description The middle school science program places an emphasis on teaching standards in the area of earth, life, and physical science. Students have an opportunity to better understand the concepts and scientific knowledge through laboratory experiences, reading, and writing. Discipline Policy Above the Line Program The approach of this program is for students to be responsible for their own behavior. They are responsible for being above the line with these target behaviors - RESPECTFUL, PRODUTIVE, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE If a student falls below the line (not exhibiting the target behaviors) the student is given the choice to fix their behavior. If the behavior continues to fall below the line an appointment is made for after school, for the student to make a formal Fix It plan. During this process, the student describes why their behavior was below the line and devises an action that will fix the behavior. If the student is unable to think of a way to fix the behavior, the teacher may suggest consequences that are fair and related to the below the line behavior. Certain behaviors are considered bottom line behaviors such as fighting, stealing, harassment, and repeated below the line behaviors in which the Fix It plans are no longer effective. Bottom line behaviors are dealt with by administration. Positive rewards for appropriate behavior: Compliment from teacher Above the Line card used for weekly raffles Positive notes and/or phone calls to parents More personal/class privileges Required Classroom Materials Textbook for the quarter (Animals, Environmental Science, Weather & Climate, Light & Sound, and Water on Earth) 1 Green folder 2 Green notebooks Pen & pencil

Standard F8.2 Benchmark: Explain orally & in writing the structure and function of animal parts and how they help the animal survive in its environment. Essential Questions: What characteristics classify living things as an animal? What behaviors and adaptations do animals have that help them to survive? Learning Objectives: The student will describe the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. The student will be able to explain the characteristics of animals. The student will be able to describe adaptations of animals in their environment. Vertebrate, invertebrate, the six characteristics of animals, adaptations, innate behavior, learned behavior.
