6 9/10/15& Why do planes fly as much as 10 km above the ground? Composition of the Atmosphere Most commercial planes fly ~33,000 ft because the air is MUCH less dense. Thus, the planes experience less drag, require less fuel, and have less turbulence. What is the atmosphere? The atmosphere = contains all of the gases on Earth, arranged in layers Some of the air is oxygen, which we breathe, but there are also many other gases, dust particles, and even some water vapor mixed into the air. 6&
7 9/10/15& Atmosphere Gases in the Atmosphere Gases include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and more Gases are constantly cycled through the atmosphere and earth We remove oxygen when we breathe in, and we add carbon dioxide when we breathe out Volcanic eruptions add gases Plants add oxygen via photosynthesis 7&
8 Gases in the Atmosphere Nitrogen " most abundant gas in atmosphere Enters through volcanic eruptions and decaying plants/animals Oxygen Enters via plant production Gases in the Atmosphere Other argon, carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, etc Layers of the Atmosphere 4 Main Layers (based on temperature changes) in the atmosphere: 1. Tropsphere 2. Mesosphere 3. Thermosphere 4. Stratosphere 8&
9 Troposphere Troposphere = Lowest layer As altitude increases, temperature decreases Most life and weather occurs here Dense layer Up to ~18km Stratosphere Stratosphere = 2 nd layer ~18-50km Ozone (O 3 ) layer protects us from UV radiation, but also causes the temperatures to rise as altitude increases Mesosphere Mesophere = 3 rd layer Extends up to ~80km above surface Coldest layer There are few molecules (inc ozone) to warm the air Carbon dioxide also absorb heat form other molecules Almost outer space Absorbs solar radiation, resulting in extremely high temperatures Measured above 2,000 degrees! However, it would not feel hot because the air is so thin and heat does not transfer well Thermosphere 9&
10 ~100 to 400 km Air is very thin here heat does not transfer easily Northern lights occur (aurora borealis) The International Space Station orbits in this layer Thermosphere Two Sublayers: 1. Ionosphere: presence of ions allow for radio wave communication 2. Exosphere: Atoms and molecules can escape into space here Thermosphere The Greenhouse Effect Greenhouse effect = Warming of Earth s surface/lower atmosphere due to gases in the atmosphere that absorb and reradiate infrared radiation trapping heat on Earth Without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life to exist. 10&
