(1) (2) Acquisition of NH 3 and GHG emission factors under French Livestock conditions GUINGAND N. (1), LOISEAU D. (1), HASSOUNA M. (2), EGLIN T (3) The 3rd International symposium on Emission of Gas and Dust from Livestock (EMILI 2017) May, 2017 St Malo, France
Context of French Pig Production pig units A low contributor 10 % NH 3 10 % CH 4 4 % N 2 O (Source : CITEPA 2016) subject to different legal regulations Technical diversity of units Plan for the reduction of Atmospheric Polluant Emissions (PREPA) Best Available Technique (BAT) Polluant Emission Declaration (GEREP) (NH 3, PM 10, CH 4, N 2 O) 4 EMEP emission factors!! with emission reduction targets. 2
Objectives of the project Establishing emission factors representatives of the technical diversity of French pig units by using collective protocols of measurements Part 1 Creation of collective protocols - Quality of data - Inter-comparison of measurements Part 2 Establishing emissions factors by measures achieved in commercial conditions 3
1 - Collective Protocols Part 1 : Creation of collective protocols to provide quality data and permit the intercomparison of measurements Development of a test-bench for infrared photoacoustic analyzers used to measure gas emissions from animal houses Generation of gas mixtures with known concentrations (NH 3, N 2 O, CH 4 and CO 2 ) Labview program to record concentration levels in the mixture and by the analyzers Hassouna et al.,
1 - Collective Protocols Part 1 : Creation of collective protocols to provide quality data and permit the intercomparison of measurements Description of a simplified method to measure NH 3 and GHG emitted by piggeries (présented during the workshop) 25, 60 and 80 fattening days 10 a.m to 4 p.m 5
1 - Collective Protocols Part 1 : Creation of collective protocols to provide quality data and permit the intercomparison of measurements Sheet drafting on protocols of measurements Publication of the following document «Measuring Emission from Livestock farming «Hassouna,Eglin et al., 2015 Document available on the USB key (English/French version) in the bag of participants 6
2- Emission factors in commercial conditions 3 major animal categories Several modalities of technical itineraries Farrowing sows - Nutritional strategy : % crude content, multiphase feeding - Type of floor : concrete FSF, plastic FSF - Slurry management : pit storage, scraper Ventilation : under and over floor extraction, diffuse ceiling. Post-weaning piglets Fattening pigs Application of the simplified method in 20 commercial farms 7
2- Emission factors in commercial conditions ex : fattening pigs N_NH3 emission (kg.place-1.y-1 N-NH 3 emission of fattening pigs Average EF for fattening pigs 2,26 kg.place -1.an -1 Fattening pigs FE AFEEP Literature 3,0 kg/place/year BREF 2,6 kg/place/year AFEEP 2,3 kg/place/year Comparison with literature and BAT-AEL given in the IRPP BREF EF close to BREF BAT AEL Lower than literature 0 EF expressed in kg.place -1.year -1 Essentially due to nutritional strategies generally implemented in French piggeries for fattening pigs 8
2- Emission factors in commercial conditions ex : fattening pigs N_NH3 en kg.place-1.year1 N_NH3 en kg.place-1.year-1 4 Influence of the type of inlet Average EF 2,26 kg.place -1.year -1 3,5 3 2,5 2 3,0 1,9 2,6 - Type of air inlet : 37% aluminium diffuse ceiling vs classic one 1,5 1 0,5 0 Classic Plafond diffuse diffuseur ceiling Plafond Alu diffuse diffuseur ceiling alu BREF Elevages Influence of the frequency of emptying slurry 4 Porcs charcutiers - Frequency of emptying slurry : - 46% every day (scraper) ,4 1,1 0 2 à 3 fois par an Tous les jours 9
What remains to be done Farrowing sows 1 - Data analysis : - Farrowing sows - Post-weaning piglets 2 - Calculation of EF in relation with technical caracteristics 3 - Comparison with literature and BAT- AEL published in the BREF IRPP Post-weaning piglets 10
Conclusions - Establishing collective protocols allowing «larger capacity of measurements» - Acquisition of emission factors in commercial conditions with the simplified method for fattening pigs, piglets and sows - Identification of potential action of reduction Better knowledge for better management Data base on available EF in literature including conditions of measurements Parallel session 5 :17h30 11
