The 2.4 million square foot complex, located on the bank of the Detroit River, is the centerpiece of Detroit s civic center. Cobo Center offers convenience, comfort, service reliability and fine food. Cobo Center offers over 200,000 square feet in meeting room space equipped to accommodate capacities from 30 to 10,000. Cobo Center boasts one of the largest continuous exhibit floor space in North America and with 623,000 square feet. Cobo Center is proud of the sustainable achievements for With the completion of our $279 million renovation, our ongoing efforts are focused in the areas of Staff Management, Communication, Waste Management, Air Quality, Water, Energy Conservation, Procurement and Community Engagement. 1

3 2015 COMMUNITY Cobo Center partners with local agencies for donations of reusable goods. Employees participate in various community service activities including volunteer work with Forgotten Harvest and Tour detroit. Cobo Center collected 314 lbs. of canned food at the 2015 holiday party for Forgotten Harvest. Employees volunteered at Eastern Market to re-purpose food for Forgotten Harvest. The Cobo team also volunteered at Tour detroit Ride, a 30 mile bike ride in September promoting sustainable transportation. 2

6 2015 ENERGY CONSERVATION Energy in Cobo Center is monitored by Metasys, a building automation system. This computer based system connects the HVAC and lighting systems, enabling them to communicate on a single platform to deliver the information needed, enhancing occupancy comfort, safety and efficiency. Using a condensate reclaim system, Cobo Center reduces potable water intake used to cool the condensate by using a heat exchange and river water. The system reclaimed 1,166,900 Btu/hr of heat energy and saved $125,133 in energy costs in Proximity to the Detroit River permits the success of this program. Daylight harvesting uses outdoor light meters to automatically adjust light based on daylight coming into the building. On sunny days lighting is reduced in parking lots, interior areas like the concourse, docks and exterior lit areas. This program reduced energy use by more than 10% in

8 WASTE MANAGEMENT: REDUCTION & DIVERSION Cobo Center s comprehensive waste management program focuses on identifying, reducing and diverting the various waste streams created by venue operations, attendees and clients. Cobo also works to reduce the amount of waste created, and diverts waste from landfills by means of reuse, re-purposing, composting and recycling items. In 2015, Cobo Center: DIVERTED 73 TONS OF WASTE FROM LANDFILL RECYCLED 31 TONS OF PAPER & CARDBOARD COMPOSTED 10 TONS OF FOOD WASTE RECYCLED 13 TONS OF WOOD PALLETS UPDATED RECYCLING STATIONS FOR SIMPLIFIED SEPARATION Cobo Center is a 100% landfill free facility. Waste that is not diverted is used by Detroit Power to convert waste into steam and electric power. 7

9 COMPOSTING AT COBO My Green Michigan is Cobo Center s composting partner. Cobo Center partnered with My Green Michigan in April 2015 and successfully composted the first event on Sunday, May 3, 2015, the 60th Annual NAACP Dinner which served over 4,000 guests. My Green Michigan picks-up kitchen food waste from Cobo Center and delivers to two local farms where compostable waste is processed and eventually becomes nutrient-rich soil. In 2015, Cobo Center composted 10 tons of food waste. My Green Michigan also works with World Centric to provide Cobo Center 100% compostable products. 8

Cobo Center is within walking distance of over 5,000 hotels rooms. Cobo Center is also home to one of thirteen stops for the Detroit People Mover, a 2.9 mile automated transit system which operates on a single track. This provides alternate transportation for visitors. Additionally, Cobo Center has bikes for employees to rent, located in the Congress parking garage. The air quality program at Cobo addresses improving the air quality within and surrounding the venue. Policies enforced include anti-idling policy, non-smoking policy, and hazardous air pollutant policy. Sustainable transportation opportunities are provided to all visitors & employees. 9

11 2015 STAFF EDUCATION Staff participation ensures success in the Cobo Center green program. By encouraging SMG, Centerplate, ABM and other teams to participate, Cobo is able to successful increase all recycling and waste diversion efforts. Sustainability information is distributed to all employees in monthly newsletters Cobo hosts two, annual all staff meetings with green presentations All associates are trained with the Sustainable Materials Manual, and pledge to participate in the Cobo green initiatives In 2015, Cobo Center finalized the green design and shared the program with all staff members. All Cobo Center staff proudly wear Cobo Green buttons as part of their uniforms. In 2015, Cobo Center increased signage in public and back of house areas to encourage staff and guests to participate in the green program. 10

This includes a focus on regional and sustainable materials as well as vendors who consider their environmental impact and support the mission of the venue. Cobo Center is a Green Venues Michigan facility and APEX/ASTM Green Meetings Certified Venue.
