1 Stephen F. & Camilla T. Brauer Hall & Preston M. Green Hall: LEED Building Tour To Our Visitors & Guests: Stephen F. & Camilla T. Brauer Hall was completed in April 2010, while Preston M. Green Hall was completed in August of Washington University has adopted a holistic approach to greener building by adopting the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design ( LEED ) System. LEED measures the design and construction of our buildings and provides certification ratings issued by the U.S. Green Building Council. Both Brauer and Green Halls were registered for LEED Certification with the U.S. Green Building Council. Stephen F. & Camilla T. Brauer Hall is officially certified LEED for New Construction, version 2.2, Gold. Preston M. Green Hall should be to be finished with the certification process and hopefully achieve LEED for New Construction, version 2.2, Gold certification by the end of Physically attached to Brauer Hall at its western side, Green Hall shares many of the same materials, amenities, systems, and design solutions as Brauer. Every space and every aspect of these projects were held to this higher green standard. Washington University, the project designers and constructors, and the Washington University community are immensely proud of these buildings. We look forward to sharing them and their sustainable features with you so that they may educate and increase awareness. 1
2 Some highlights: 1. Surrounding Landscape and Hardscape: Extensive use of native and drought resistant plants reduce the demand for irrigation; Built with a high percentage of both regional and recycledcontent materials; and Irrigation is provided by captured rainwater only which is stored in a cistern converted from a salvaged 100+ year old brick sewer; Pavement was minimized and shade trees were planted to prevent a build up of heat on the site to the detriment of building energy performance and local eco systems; Extensively served by 4 bus lines and the St. Louis Metrolink, reducing the need for personal transportation; Closely connected to the neighboring community with a park, restaurants, retail stores, churches, and a theatre all within walking distance. Access to a bike path, bike storage, and shower and changing rooms encourage building occupants to leave their cars at home. 3. Lower Level Main Stair at Green Hall: mile from 2. Entrance Vestibule at Green Hall: High percentage of materials from 500 mile radius of WU; A permanently mounted monitor continuously runs an informational slide show about the sustainable features of Green Hall. 2
