6 PURPOSE OF THE MEETING To present background information on the project to Mapela T/A and to provide an opportunity for questions and comments relating to the project. This meeting forms part of the public participation process, and will be structured in the format of a Public Participation / Consultation Meeting. All concerns/comments will be recorded and included within a Public Participation Report that will be submitted to the DMR along with the project s Basic Assessment Report 6

10 PROJECT DESCRIPTION Mogalakwena Mine is relocating its existing Explosives Magazine Storage will be kept below 80m 3 in total until further authorisation is obtained. The newly constructed Explosives Depot (which will consist of the Explosives Magazine (bunker area) as well as an Emulsion (BME and AEL) and ANPP Storage and Handling area will be expanded on the existing Waste Rock Dump (WRD) No.2, which is located within the existing mine boundary area for which Mogalakwena Mine has a Mining Right and approved EMP 10

11 PROJECT DESCRIPTION Activity applied for: Listing Notice 1: GNR 983 of 2014 Activity 51: The expansion of facilities for the storage, or storage and handling of a dangerous good, where the capacity of such storage facility will be expanded by more than 80 cubic meres 11

12 PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Expansion of the Explosives Depot will include the following: 4x 200 tons (in total m 3 ) of BME emulsion silo s; BME bunded areas around BME silo s. Bunded area capacity of m 3 each (551.44m 3 in total for four BME bunded areas); 6x 40 tons (in total 99.73m 3 ) of AEL emulsion silo s; AEL bunded areas around AEL silo s. Bunded area capacity of 44.51m 3 each (267.06m 3 in total for six AEL bunded areas); 2x 50 tons (in total 41.55m 3 ) of Ammonium Nitrate Porous Prills (ANPP) emulsion silo s; 12

Bunded area capacity of 55.86m 3 each (total m 3 in total for two ANPP bunded areas); Storage of explosives and accessories of more than 80 m 3 in the existing four Explosives Magazine containers. Accessory and equipment stores; Guard (security) houses and accompanying stores; and Water management measures, including pipelines, a L water tank for spills and cleaning purposes, a pump base and a pit collection sump. 13

16 STORAGE CAPACITY The total capacity for the storage of explosives and emulsion is m 3 for the Emulsion Storage and Handling Section, and 228m 3 for the Magazine Section. Therefore the total combined capacity of the Explosives Depot storage areas will be m 3. 16

17 SUMMARY OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS No significant impacts were identified during the environmental impact assessment process. Medium rated environmental impacts identified however relate to the following: Potential for fire and/or explosion due to explosive material and substances being exposed to sparks or open flames. Water or wind erosion of topsoil during and after rehabilitation. Compaction of topsoil, affecting growth of vegetation during rehabilitation. 17

18 SUMMARY OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS Potential unsuccessful re-vegetation during rehabilitation due to shortage of nutrients, compaction and slope failure. Potential establishment of alien invasive plants. Potential light pollution and nuisance due to lighting at the Explosive Depot Potential wash down of sediments resulting in sedimentation or siltation 18
