1 Zurich, 11 February 2016 Three-year survey by Grass & Partner: Outplacement and Bestplacement of Executives in the German-speaking part of Switzerland The number of total separations in marketing and sales jobs has increased Industrial management positions and staff functions continue to be under pressure; more recently marketing and sales jobs are also at a risk People over 50 get back into work Restructuring and personal disagreements lead to separations At present social media is of little importance when it comes to finding an executive job Zurich, 11th February 2016 In 2015, 500 managers and technical specialists from a wide variety of industries, were looking for a job, relying on the help of Grass & Partner who is specialised in separation management, a collaboration which on average lasted six months to finding a successful solution. For the tenth time, the consulting firm is herewith presenting its three-year survey. The trend of people over 50 losing their job continues to increase. For 2015 the three-year survey revealed that 43% of those made redundant were over 50, and that 70% were over 45 years old. The Grass & Partner survey findings, refute the myth that it is almost impossible to find jobs for people in these age groups. Their personality, experience, expertise and willingness to perform as well as their personal brand are in demand. Personal traits which the over 45 year olds, have internalized to a large extent since concluding the coaching, and which they are able to translate into practice in the labour market. New Trend: significant job losses in marketing and sales The survey 2015 highlighted that out of the 500 managers and technical specialists, which were provided with personal support, 22% of them were in the areas of marketing and sales. That is approximately 70% more than two years ago. This may be linked, among other things, to the ongoing outsourcing of marketing activities to other countries, the substantial reduction of marketing budgets, and the continued shift to online sales channels. Financial industry quo Vadis? Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Industry still remains under pressure With the proportion of people made redundant in the banking sector standing at 11%, the number has decreased during the course of Two years ago the proportion had yet been at 27%. For the same period the number of people made redundant in the SME sector rose to 32% from 20%. The strong Swiss franc continued to unsettle the Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Industry in the previous quarters. SMEs in particular have suffered from the difficult conditions, prevailing since January The analysis of the other sectors, such as insurance (11%), pharmaceutical/chemical (16%), information technology (7%), administration (4%) and services (10%) showed that little has changed over the past three years. 2 With the current number of people made redundant, in the wholesale and retail trade, standing at 9% it has more than doubled over the past year (4%). People over 50 get back into work 42% of the 500 managers and technical specialists, who were provided with personal support, were over 50. Main finding from the survey is that the ideal and therefore most successful coaching duration for management staff over 50 lasts at least six to twelve months. The trend of people over 50 losing their job continues to increase. Last year s survey highlights that 43% of the managers made redundant were over 50. The Grass & Partner survey findings, refute the myth that it is almost impossible to find jobs for people in this age group. Their personality, experience, expertise and willingness to perform as well as their personal brand are in demand. Personal traits which the over 50 year olds, have internalized to a large extent since concluding the coaching, and which they are able to translate into practice in the labour market. Sectors and functional areas are insignificant with regards to the separation from over 50 year old employees. By contrast older managers often tend to become self-employed: they will move into consulting or take on an interim management function, establish or buy a company, or participate as an active member on the board of directors or of a foundation. They value the fact that they have greater autonomy in the management of their time, prefer the more flexible working practices and having to care less about corporate politics. Grass & Partner are very well acquainted with these requirements having guided numerous older managers over the past years to new shores. Experience shows that a coaching in this age group simply takes more time and requires patience. The survey also shows that women over 50 are still starkly under-represented. As there will be more and more women in executive positions, this is likely to change in the future. Switching industries tends to be more difficult the older people get In 2015 a decline in switching industries was observed. Whilst two years ago yet 40% of people changed their scope of activities, only 33% of them did so last year. As to the educational attainment, of the survey s participants, the survey s findings state that this was practically unchanged in comparison to the previous year. 61% of the people supported hold a university degree. In 2015 Grass & Partner guided 32% women and 68% men. In 2015 the redundancies of members of the middle management and executive committee slightly increased in comparison to the previous year. Main reasons for separation More than 52% (2014: 46%) of employee separations were due to restructuring and mergers & acquisitions. Runner-up was related to personal chemistry. 26% of people who left (or had to leave) their job, did so due to irreconcilable differences with management or employees. This was followed by the reduction of staff (12%), poor performance (7%), and others (3%). 3 Personal networking (one-to-one meeting) is currently a lot more successful than social media. 42% of all people who were made redundant in 2015 found a new position through active and personal networking (one-to-one meetings). This proportion is similar to previous years. By contrast the print media as well as the online advert lost ground, having decreased from 31% in 2014 to 25% last year.
