2 Brief Introduction/Overview Management Champion for our workplace initiative of implementing the new National CSA Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace at CCOHS Here to discuss and share our journey to date 2

3 CCOHS: Who We Are We are a non-profit federal department corporation governed by a tripartite council that ensures a balanced, approach to workplace health and safety issues. Adopting the National Standard for PHS/Workplace: 3

4 At CCOHS We Believe that all Canadians have a fundamental right to a healthy and safe workplace environment. 4

5 Background Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community The World Health Organization (WHO) 5

6 Background People with mental illnesses successfully work across the full spectrum of workplaces. Some people choose to disclose their mental illness and some do not. Most importantly, people with a mental illness can succeed or fail just like any other worker. 6

14 CCOHS Journey to Date Why? Quote from our PCEO, Stevan Horvath: We are pleased to adopt the new Standard and use its guidelines to enhance our current offerings, to look at creating new ones and to launch our own internal program for employees. Our hope is that the Standard will lead to a culture of greater understanding and compassion for workers individual mental health needs, and give employers a better framework for implementing a psychological health and safety program in their own workplaces. 14

Finally, HOW are we doing all this Created a new workplace committee/team 5 individuals represented by 1 manager/champion and 4 workers All from different Service Units which brought different knowledge areas to the table Put together project charter Outlined goals, objectives/deliverables, outcomes/measures with a target date for each step 15

16 CCOHS Journey to Date How? Scope of project was important decided that we weren t addressing individual s mental health but rather focus efforts on the workplace factors that could negatively and/or positively affect someone s mental health at work 16

17 CCOHS Journey to Date How? Collectively reviewed the Standard Evaluated various tools to help with implementation OHCOW, Copenhagen, Guarding Work Selected Guarding Work Surveyed all staff using the Guarding Work survey We had 80% response rate 17

18 CCOHS Journey to Date How? Our survey report indicated 1 red flag and 4 significant concerns Just a quick background on GM@W: 68 question survey Received report, broken down by Risk Factor Average score out of 20 and fall into a range of Serious Concern / Significant Concern / Minimal Concern / Relative Strength 18

19 CCOHS Journey to Date How? Drafted an action plan that identified start and end dates, suggested action team, pro/cons, indicators and a space for management response Response time aimed for 3 weeks, similar to JHSC response time 19

20 CCOHS Journey to Date How? Management reviewed the action plan and had no major issues with the recommendations! However Our committee did push for stringent timelines (due to original mandate). Management may need to adjust as per operational requirements We have started the roll out of action ideas 20

21 Next Steps at CCOHS First action item review policies and procedures, including workplace harassment/bullying/violence, civility & respect, values & ethics Next Items, e.g.: Change Management re: psychological assessment and health factors 21

22 Final Suggestions/Tips Get buy-in from Senior Management and find a champion in the workplace Read the Standard and gather materials and data (look at tools and resources in the Appendices) Document all work and progress Do Something! If you ask for feedback, make sure that you follow up and start to make change. Re-survey when necessary Remember, this is a multi year project changing culture and current practices can take time Adopting the National Standard for PHS/Workplace: 22
