1 Volume 1 Version 1 Lockheed Martin Leadership Association Aurora Chapter 561 Newsletter From the Chapter President Welcome to the Lockheed Martin Leadership Association of Aurora, NMA Chapter #561 We are very excited that you have decided to join us on our journey to establish a local NMA chapter here in Aurora. LMLA Aurora will be able to better serve our members and provide more opportunities to participate, learn new skills, support our community, grow as leaders, meet new friends, reconnect with old friends and be a part of a great organization. The LMLA Chapter will be as great as we make it so I challenge you, help us shape it into an association envied by others! Be an active member, participate in events, join a committee, lead a project, share your ideas, the payoffs will be enormous new friends, exciting experiences, enhanced skills, and growth, as a individual, and as a leader. Together we can accomplish amazing things I look forward to working with you all in Diane Kirkpatrick LMLA Aurora 561 Chapter President
2 From the Central Area Chair/National Director Just off the podium They have trained for hours, days, weeks, months, and years. The sacrifices have been made. The injuries have healed. The equipment has been perfected. The moment is finally here: The Olympics! For some it is the last time they will ever be on the Olympic stage and for others their career has just begun. Each athlete has one goal in mind to win the gold medal and watch their country flag be raised while hearing their national anthem. But not everyone is a winner, for the 4th place finishers the heartache is deep and profound. They are just off the podium. They didn t cross the finish line fast enough or get the highest score so close to being on the podium and receiving that Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal. So incredibly close to being forever known as the Bronze, Silver or Gold medalist in their sport that they worked so hard in. So what makes them a leader? They get back up. They brush off the dirt and try again. Bobsledder, Lolo Jones, did not get on the podium in Sochi but her teammates did. She cheered them on, took their picture and shouted U-S-A as they took the podium. In an interview she says, The lesson in humbleness is definitely gold for sure." Lolo is just one example of the leadership that has shined through in these Winter Olympics. For Nordic Combined athlete, Todd Lodwick, he says this, It's the Olympic rings, it's the Olympic Games," he said. "This being my sixth, I've really learned how to take it all in, what the five rings represent and what the American flag represents. Not only for myself, but for people back home, and the pride that they see every four years. So how can we as members of the National Management Association take the lessons learned in Sochi and become better leaders in our organization? We can realize that not everything will go as planned but we get back up and keep on going. We can continue to strive for the Gold medal: building membership, creating Professional Development opportunities that our members want, engaging in the community and cheering each other. The podium doesn t have to be 4/1000 of a second away it is in our reach, so go for it and don t give up! Elizabeth Thomas Central Area Chair / National Director
3 Professional Development Committee The Professional Development Committee (PDC) is actively engaged and working to establish learning opportunities for our chapter members based on inputs from our local LM senior leadership, Career Development Roundtable discussion and information to be obtained through a planned survey. The Professional Development Committee (PDC) consists of the following members. Please engage any of these individuals to voice your desires. Chuck Boyer P254 Andrew Brown P254 Kyria Brown - Triton Bob Collins - DE Frank De Leonardis - FSLS Jared Hershman P254 Dani Hite - DE Scott Jones - FSLS Edna Lee P254 Betty Lott P254 Bob Price P254 Kristina Rourke - DE Dave Schmitt - DE Activities to date include: Career Discussion Panel Frank Caldwell and Bill Sonnemaker provided insight into their careers and what individuals can do to prepare for future opportunities. Career Development Roundtable: Betty Lott led this event and is in the process of collecting all of the information shared by the participants. The discussion was very good and provided a lot of useful information which will be shared with the chapter members. Stay tuned for the details In-work: Dani Hite and Bob Collins are establishing relationships with other LMLA Chapters and requesting their PDP and any training material that can be shared. More to come Planned Activities: Establish the Professional Development Plan (PDP) Career Planning Training discussion details will be shared soon. If you are interested in supporting the committee to help establish and implement learning opportunities, please contact one of the PDC members. If you have any suggestions, please them to any team member. Remember we are in this together! Bob Collins Professional Development Committee Chairman
4 Community Service Committee On Saturday, 15 February about a dozen community volunteers helped Hearts Across the Miles (HATM) package and ship morale packages to our troops deployed overseas. We packaged and shipped fifty large boxes, totaling nearly 2,500 pounds, to nearly 25 units deployed throughout the world (we ll post photos on the HATM Facebook page later this week) On Saturday, 15 March, Hearts Across the Miles, community volunteers, and the Metro Denver Area Girl Scout council will partner to ship over 10,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our deployed troops. The packaging event will take place at the Colorado National Guard armory, 55 S. Potomac, in Aurora. We ll need all hands on deck, from 9:00am until approximately 4:00pm, to support this worthy event. If you can t make the entire time, we prefer early rather than late, since we d hate to have folks come at 1300 and we might be finished. Our packaging day ends when we re done. If we get a big turnout early in the day, we might get done early!! After that, we hope to support Special Olympics during this summer. We re still awaiting details on the date, time, and location, but stay tuned. Alisha Gilbert Community Services Committee Chairman Events & Activities Calling all artists, designers, and doodlers! We need a Chapter Logo and we want you to submit an entry! - One entry per person - Entries due to Travis Nelson by 18 April - Logo will be voted on by the LMLA Chapter 18 April 16 May - Winner will receive the glory and a Parking Spot for the Month of June (Front of Building A)
