1 SHRM Medina County Newsletter August [Edition 1, Volume 2] Letter from the President I hope this finds everyone well! Can you believe that we are half way through 2015? This year is going so fast! It is time to start putting together our board for We vote at the October meeting so we need to have the ballot together soon! If you are interested, please see one of the current board members or myself. We will be looking for the following key positions: VP Membership This position is a 3 year Leadership track to Presidency. In the second year your role will be the VP Program position. Each position can be held for up to 2 terms, except for the 3 year Leadership Track positions, which are each one year per position. To be a Board Member you also need to be a National SHRM Member. If you are not a National SHRM member and your company does not help you pay for the membership, the chapter will help fund you. So please do not let that stop your interest in being on the Board. Currently, the Board meets on the first Thursday morning of the month. Remember we do not have any meetings in August and we will see you on September 22! When I prepare for the certification exam with the SHRM Learning System, I won t be simply memorizing a textbook; I ll be applying concepts, using behavioral judgment, and understanding best practices for handling day to day business as well as unexpected scenarios. I ll be learning from the experiences of other HR professionals, sharpening my skills and boosting my productivity and effectiveness to drive our organization s success. 3. THESE CERTIFICATIONS WERE DEVELOPED WITH EMPLOYERS IN MIND SHRM conducted global research including outreach to major corporations, universities, and over 35,000 members of the profession worldwide. Based on its research findings, SHRM determined that in addition to technical knowledge, a successful HR career will also be determined by behavioral competencies and the resulting certifications include both of these essential elements. This credential will therefore reflect what I need to know and how to apply it to be a leader in our organization. Earning this credential will give me the recognition and flexibility to use my knowledge, skills and competencies anywhere our organization operates, now and in the future. 5. It is a well respected organization at the forefront of HR trends and emerging professional knowledge. The SHRM BoCK, the credential and my recertification will be supported by SHRM and kept current and relevant, representing lifelong learning as our profession continues to evolve with the world around us. Kim Langley, M.Ed. will speak on Emotional Intelligence. After this session, you will be able to: Explain why the brain reacts more emotionally than logically at times, define emotional hi jacking, and provide examples Use self talk to manage your emotions Explain what to do instead of attacking, taking sides, blaming, closing doors, arguing and avoiding List some effective ways for being an EI mentor, helping others to manage their emotions 3

4 Silent Auction Fundraiser for SHRM Foundation SHRM Medina County invites you to participate in our annual Silent Auction, which will take place at our Annual Member Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, December 10, Proceeds benefit the SHRM Foundation. The SHRM Foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps shape the future of HR by awarding scholarships to future leaders, furthering HR research, publishing reports and briefings, producing case study DVDs, and moving thought leadership forward. All SHRM Foundation products are complimentary and their focus on further the HR profession and professionals is made possible by donations from sponsors and donors.
