PhDs in S&T like to find job in research institutions. 3. SME prefer graduates to PhDs. 4. Investors and VCs have poor scientific and technological background and do not employ PhDs in S&T.

3 1. PhDs in science and technology (S&T) have no background in management, IPR, business, entrepreneurship. Main drawback: PhDs rarely become entrepreneurs and establish new companies based on research, competitive, able to grow: their knowledge, research results and skills do not generate sufficient wealth. 4 1. PhDs in science and technology (S&T) have no background in management, IPR, business, entrepreneurship. Main drawback: PhDs rarely become entrepreneurs and establish new companies based on research, competitive, able to grow: their knowledge, results and skills do not generate sufficient wealth. To do: it is extremely important to include training on issues of business management, intellectual property, strategy,... in doctoral courses in S&T.

5 2. PhDs in S&T like to find job in research institutions. Main drawback: PhD remain at Universities and PRO without real perspectives to meet their ambitions. Academic staff in Italian universities (S&T) from: MIUR data base The academic staff probably will decrease. Italian universities are unable to recruit the PhDs that want to make research.

To do: it is extremely important that PhD candidates in S&T collaborate with companies during their course. Research in S&T should be shared by University and Industry.

7 3. SME prefer graduates to PhDs. Main drawback: the small presence of PhDs in companies implies the losing of innovative competitiveness science-based. Number of researchers every 1000 employees in companies (2007) from: OECD Main Science and Technology Indicators 2009 In Italy the number of researchers is small in comparison with other OECD countries. This may depend on the loss of large companies and on the shift from manufacturing to commercial enterprises.

8 3. SME prefer graduates to PhDs. Main drawback: the small presence of PhDs in companies implies the losing of innovative competitiveness science-based. To do: it is extremely important that companies collaborate with universities using PhD candidates. Companies, expecially SME, should learn the value of PhD holders in developing competitive products.

9 4. Investors and VCs have poor scientific and technological background and do not employ PhDs in S&T. Main drawback: the investor are able to analyse and evaluate a financial BP, they are in trouble to understand the technological and industrial risk in a new company science-based. Early stage investments in Europe from: AIFI In Italy the investment is too low. The risk capital invested in Italy is not enough and does not trigger competitive industrial projects.

10 4. Investors and VCs have poor scientific and technological background and do not employ PhDs in S&T. Main drawback: the investor are able to analyse and evaluate a financial BP, they are in trouble to understand the technological and industrial risk in a new company science-based. To do: it is extremely important that venture capitalists employ PhD holders in S&T to be more active in investment in business proposal on new sciences-based products (nanotech, biotech, materials,...)

16 challanges 1. High education, at PhD level, will have a role in the future of our countries if we want to mantain and increase richness, welfare, democracy. Public bodies, financial institutions, industries and universities should make a strong and common effort to sustain PhD education and promotion in Europe. 2. The universities must put the PhD programs as the key point for the University (research) and Industry (market) collaboration. 3. I would like to include «the role of PhD for the Knowledge Transfer in Italy» in the Netval agenda for I ask and hope the University of Camerino, Netval member, will promote this effort.
