It will be updated and amended from time to time in accordance with the changing needs of the University and the requirements of the job. PURPOSE OF ROLE: To lead the development and implementation of the University s researcher development activities within the Research Training Institute; to create and manage a programme of activities to grow the capacity of researchers within the University, encompassing the entire researcher journey from PhD student to established Professor. The role requires the post holder to be responsive to the changes in the external environment; and institution and sector-wide policy changes. The role holder will be expected to: To engender a vibrant, learning environment for researchers within the context of the training institute, wherever those researchers may be located, by creating a series of workshops or other such events, to inform, direct, mentor and motivate active researchers within the University, irrespective of their stage of development. To liaise with EDU, ILS and LND teams to ensure that active researchers are facilitated to carry out their research duties, including the development of the research-skills capability; the promotion of innovation in research activity; early career researcher engagement in research-facing learning strategies; quality enhancement; and quality assurance, in combination with mentoring of more established staff.
2 To lead the implementation and further development of networking and profile raising events within the context of the University's research and enterprise strategy, in partnership with the Faculty s departments, central services and offices. To provide strategic oversight for the management of postgraduate research students, including facilitating the servicing of Faculty based Research Degree Committees and related structures, ensuring definitive student record (RDA paperwork etc) and related databases (REF, HESA etc) To provide leadership for the process of recruiting, supervising and training of all PhD students, including pan-university skills training, working in partnership with the Training and Research Programmes Manager, and related staff embedded in the Faculty research offices. To work closely with the HR Directorate on researcher development initiatives including the attainment of charter marks such as Athena Swan and HR Excellence in Research, support for a network of Early Career Researchers, and developing new research and enterprise training programmes for academic staff. Attend on behalf of the University, external events to promote and bring best practice through the University in the area of skills training. To work with marketing and academic faculties as well as other teams within GRE, to raise the profile of research underway at the University, to share best practice in terms of training and research support, with a view to encourage impact identification, income generation and diversification.
3 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Team Specific: Generic: To lead the strategic enhancement of developmental activities for researchers within the Faculties, through the organization of a series of regular events that provide specific support to all research active staff, especially those in the earlier stages of their research careers and academic staff connected to those researchers (e.g. postgraduate students, and early career researchers, postgraduate student supervisors). To monitor and evaluate data related to the quality of post-graduate researchers, and to work closely with key stakeholders including the manager of PGRO, Heads of Department (HoD), Faculty Research leads to ensure improvement plans are in place where necessary. To contribute to the wider activities of research engagement within the Faculties and University providing strategic advice on the training and skills needs of the researcher body, including established researchers, and the dissemination of good practise. To lead continuing enhancement and to drive change and improvements across the Faculties in the areas of research training quality; and work with Research leads to promote the involvement of early and mid- career researchers in such enhancement activities. To coordinate peer-to-peer mentoring activity, in consultation and collaboration with PVCs, HoDs and Faculty research leads. To lead, encourage and support opportunities to bid for external funding and support for projects which assist in the delivery of research and enterprise growth strategies. To lead on the promotion of a wide programme of staff development events and activities in areas related to research and enterprise to disseminate knowledge gained from research and enterprise. To act as the key point of reference for the Head of Learning and Development Team (LND), Head of Educational Development Unit (EDU) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) for all matters related to researcher development within the Faculties. Professional Practice To keep abreast of developments within the discipline and seek continuous improvement of own professional practice. Scholarship To participate in the scholarly activity of the University, maintaining high professional standing in your discipline and developing your own scholarly profile.
4 University Systems To comply with University and Faculty approved policies, guidelines and standard operating procedures in relation to duties, and to implement these in an efficient and professional way. Student Care To maintain an overview of the welfare, progression, assessment and overall satisfaction of postgraduate students Managing Self Maintain a professional presentation of self at all times through effective communications skills, good time management and caring attitude to students and staff. Ability to work effectively and deliver under pressure. Core Requirements Commitment to key strategic priorities of the University; Adhere to and promote the University s Equality and Diversity policies; Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations; Support and promote the University s Sustainability policies, including the Carbon Management Plan, and carry out duties in a resource efficient way, recognising the shared responsibility of minimising the university's negative environmental impacts wherever possible. Additional Requirements: Ability to travel, as the role may involve visiting international as well as regional partners. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: Performance Indicators will be established in consultation with the DVC(Research & Enterprise) and Director, GRE as part of the post holder s annual Appraisal and Professional Development Review and with due regard to the University s KPIs. KEY RELATIONSHIPS (Internal & External): Maintain effective relationships with students, academic colleagues, administrative and management staff within the Faculties, for example, OSA, EDU and LND and develop key links with external partners, employers, local business practitioners and the research community in the area of subject specialisation.
