2 INTRODUCTION This guide is compiled by the Cultural Office of the State of Kuwait in London and aims to present in a user friendly fashion the latest developments in the evaluation of academic research and postgraduate studies in British universities. This guide is rooted in the three-fold function of the Cultural Office, academic, supervisory and advisory, vis-à-vis students and sponsors alike and the longstanding expertise in, and familiarity with UK higher education system. British universities (currently at 168) enjoy a distinguished academic reputation in a wide spectrum of academic disciplines (69). However, they vary in the quality of research produced and relevant resources. The UK universities' research and quality are evaluated by the Research Assessment Exercise issued periodically for higher education government funding purposes. The RAE follows specific criteria with several indices. In addition, the Times and the Guardian conduct annual surveys and guides to British universities. The Cultural Office has devised a formula whereby academic research and postgraduate studies are classified evaluation and recognition purposes. The assessment formula devised and presented in this guide, which will be subject to annual update, aims to classify UK research standard on the basis of the periodic RAE as well as the Times and Guardian annual surveys and guides. The Cultural Offices of other Gulf states (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, & UAE) have reviewed and endorsed the contents of this guide. 4 How to use this guide 1. Universities that are recommended by the Cultural Office have been listed, alphabetically, per discipline. There are 69 disciplines in all. 2. By way of guidance as to the sought academic disciplines, an explanatory note has been placed at the top of the relevant page indicating subjects affiliated to or covered by the discipline in question. This is followed by a list of universities that are recommended by this office. 3. Universities are listed in accordance with their Cultural Office index rating, which is based on the RAE These ratings are valid for five years, until an updated RAE is issued. 4. Universities that have not achieved the required rating of the Cultural Office index, but are listed among the top 20 universities by the Times or Guardian for the relevant discipline, are added (and will be reviewed annually) to the main list. The non-listing of a particular university under a particular discipline indicates that the university in question has not achieved the required rating according to the Cultural Office index that is based on the RAE, or that it has not been listed among the top 20 universities in the Times s and the Guardian s guides. 6. The Cultural Office will only verify academic acceptance letters from universities listed in this guide. 7. The Cultural Office recommendation of a certain university is the minimum requirement for verification of acceptance. Please note that certain sponsors have specific requirements. Therefore, candidates are advised to refer, in the first instance, to their respective sponsors to ensure that all requirements are met.

Research of all types, empirical or theoretical, strategic, applied, or policy-focused will be considered of equal standing. The research areas and sub-areas covered include, but are not confined to: accounting education, accounting history, accounting theory, auditing, accounting and computing; accounting and government, public sector and not-for-profit organisations; behavioural finance, computational finance, corporate finance, corporate governance; critical, social and environmental accounting; finance theory, financial accounting and reporting, financial econometrics, financial institutions, financial management, financial markets, financial mathematics, international accounting, international finance, management accounting, managerial finance, market-based accounting research, methodology and methods, studies of the accounting profession, taxation, treasury management; and other aspects of accounting and finance.
