6 Mining Safety Institute of Peru (ISEM) Non-profit Organization, constituted by mining companies, institutions and professionals interested in reducing fatalities in the national mining. ISEM was founded on February 25th, 1998, under the sponsorhip of the Mining Chambers, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru and Engineers College (Chapter of Mines Engineers )

7 Why ISEM was founded? ISEM was founded in 1998 as part of one strategy of the mining sector, in consequence of : 1. Fatalities increase. 2. Mining activities development, new mining projects, increase contractors and new employees with a pour experience in mines.

9 Background ILO data: Accidents and occupational diseases kill people daily. More than 2,3 million deaths per year. Annually 337 million accidents occur in the workplace worldwide.

27 Core safety (USA) In the United States of America has plan developed based on employers' initiatives to eliminate fatal accidents and reduce all accidents generally within 5 years, this effort has been called CORE SAFETY, which have subscribed companies together total more than 100 thousand workers.

28 CORE Safety - USA SCHEME 0 : 50 : 5 100,000 workers voluntary program. Reduce workplace injuries by 50% (Lost Time Accidents) Main goal: zero fatalities. 28

Improve exchange of experience and good practice in OSH. 3. Promote a new generation of Safety Profesionals with an additional business sector mentality. 4. To generate better conditions for new projects. 5. Improve legislation on OSH development as a result of proactive basis. 6. Complement with state inspection and improve the skills of inspectors.

45 CONCLUSIONS 1. Despite improvements in safety indicators, fatalities continue to exceed the 25 victims per year, it is necessary to implement a national plan to eliminate them. 2. The implementation of any plan necessarily requires management commitment, through its leadership can ensure a successful implementation, improving the organizational climate and promoting a transformational leadership. 3.- The Peru has companies, leaders and professionals capable of taking this national crusade forward, through the commitment and effort by measurable performance standards shared. 4. We hope that learning this process of implementing strategies of the Roadmap is also applied nationally.
