Location of Sites/Timeline Orange County Workforce Investment Board (OCWIB) 1300 S. Grand Ave. Building B,3 rd floor, Santa Ana Orange County Business Council 2 Park Plaza, Suite 100, Irvine One Stop Center 125 Technology Dr. West, Ste. 200, Irvine Interviews and visits took place in July-August 2012
Industry Professionals Jessica Amezcua Workforce Investment Board Wallace Walrod,Chief Economic Advisor Orange County Business Council Ann Marshall, One Stop Center
Job Availability More and more young graduates enter the labor force to find there are few jobs available in their desired industries. This is due to the Recession and because Baby Boomers who are well educated and have high levels of experience continue to work, stalling the natural career progression for younger generations.
Entering the Workforce Today Due to the recession older workers are occupying traditionally younger workforce starter jobs. As a result young graduates may be stuck and not able to enter the workforce in meaningful ways or at the time they desire. Prolonged uncertainty about current and future job market trends will continue to hamper the employment and career prospects of this generation.
Educational Preparation for Work Additionally, the education system has become increasingly constrained by financial problems. Educational attainment has suffered lowering the county s ability to provide a talented workforce pool. This and the increasing tuition rates of colleges has decreased the number of students able to further their education.
The Future Orange County is in the midst of a transition to knowledgebased, 21 st Century economy. Due to the recession many traditional high wage jobs have disappeared. New opportunities are emerging creating high wage jobs due to International trade, Information Technology, Cleantech and the emerging importance of the Creative Economy have resulted in a blurring of traditional cluster boundaries.
Putting Data to Work st Qtr 3rd Qtr East West North How can employment data be used to determine a college major or choose a career path?
Why do I need to know about labor market trends Help your decision making about possible careers Make informed decisions about choosing an occupation Your best insurance against the ups and downs in the labor market is to prepare yourself with a variety of skills so you can be flexible and adapt to changes
Terms Defined Labor Market: the marketplace of available jobs and workers to fill them A market trend is a definable pattern that, over time, causes industry dynamics to change. Understanding these trends will help you identify the current and future skill sets required by a variety of industries.
Choosing a Career Career choices are important. We make good choices when we: - have a thorough understanding of who we are and what we want in our work and life -take the time to gather labor market information - combine and apply information about ourselves and the labor market in creative ways
Understanding Labor Market Information Making sense of labor market information will give you an advantage. It will allow you to: - Recognize the right kind of information that will help you develop your career plan - Make informed decisions about choosing an occupation -Identify sources of training and education
Orange County Workforce Investment Board The OCWIB oversees Orange County workforce development activities and establishes programs in response to the workforce needs of OC. The system operates through One-Stop Centers. Each center offers a wealth of training, information and assistance for job seekers.
Where are the jobs? Six economic sectors will account for as many as 85% of all the new jobs in Orange County in the next decade Health Care, Business Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Construction, Manufacturing and Retailing A highly educated workforce is a must
Employment Development Department Projections The 50 occupations with the most job openings are forecasted to generate 52% of all job openings. Some require On the Job Training (34 of 50) Higher skilled jobs require AA degree or higher Half are health care related Others require professional degrees
Presentation to Students Labor Market Information will be presented to 11 th grade students as part of their Career/College unit that is conducted each year of high school in grades 9-12.
Student Interaction Students will be asked to rate from 1 to 10 how concerned they are about being able to find a job when they enter the labor force? Students will be asked to share what they envision themselves doing for work in ten years? What could prevent them from getting the job they want?
Case Study Students will listen to the Youth Radio story of a recent college grad whose path to the labor force hasn t gone according to plan. Students will be asked to share, Do they know of anyone who has had to take an unexpected career path due to the economic downturn?
Considering a job driven by data Given their knowledge of what they like and are good at, combined with the Labor Market Trends, what careers would they consider? What education or training would they need? What could they do with their education or training in case a future economic downturn causes them to lose their job?
