There are no entry qualifications or age limits required by learners to undertake these qualifications unless this is a legal requirement of the process or the environment. Assessment is open to any learner who has the potential to achieve the assessment criteria set out in the qualifications. What are these qualifications? Referred to as Improve Proficiency Qualifications (IPQ s), they are workbased qualifications developed specifically for the food and drink industry. IPQs confirm competence in the workplace. They are based on units of assessment, covering the occupational skills (OS), occupational knowledge (OK) or underpinning knowledge (UK) needed to carry out specific job roles. 3 Who are these qualifications for? These qualifications are designed for learners who are working in a food manufacture or supply chain environment and offers a sustainable continuous improvement programme for the workplace. The qualifications offer learners the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge required to prove competence at work. They will also suit learners who are competent at core production and/or manufacturing activities and are looking for ways of developing existing skills and knowledge to support productivity. The enabling of learners to progress from an Award, Certificate or Diploma to another appropriate higher level of qualification is a key feature in the design of these qualifications. What do they cover? These qualifications cover the skills and knowledge in a wide variety of food manufacturing operations including: food quality food safety food manufacture problem solving plant maintenance. For the first time, these qualifications offer food manufacturers a unique blend of change management/ team working competencies and improvement tools and techniques. Change management sits at the heart of lean manufacturing where communication, behaviour and team working perform together to create a sustainable continuous improvement culture. These qualifications also offer individuals the opportunity to develop their knowledge around the tools and techniques. Where do the qualifications lead? These qualifications provide progression opportunities for learners seeking to enter into an Apprenticeship, and the Level 2, 3 and 4 Certificates and Diplomas are included in the Improve Apprenticeship Framework: Food and Drink (England) (FR01259).

4 How is the qualification delivered? IPQ s are competence based qualifications in which the evidence put forward by the learner can only be regarded as valid, reliable, sufficient and authentic if demonstrated in a real working environment, where work activities or work outcomes assessed are the learners own work/contribution and provides evidence of improvements to the business. They ensure that individuals develop the skills and knowledge, which are exactly those needed to perform reliably and consistently at work. The knowledge content of the qualifications is designed to support and suit individual s needs. It will support those who require the basics, but will also develop those who require significantly more detailed knowledge and understanding. How is the qualification assessed? These proficiency qualifications are specifically designed to be assessed in the workplace, therefore workplace performance evidence is essential for all units of assessment. The proficiency qualifications contain three types of units of assessment: Occupational skills units must normally be assessed by observation in the workplace. Assessment requirements and guidance are outlined on each unit. Occupational knowledge units must be assessed through questioning methods relevant to the needs of the learner on or off-the-job. The use of employer s training and assessment processes and records in the workplace are strongly encouraged, where this supports evidence of competent learner performance.
