BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Health & Social Care 1. EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY In this set of activities you will demonstrate that you understand diversity, equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice in a social care setting, that you can demonstrate good practice and support and challenge the practice of others. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING This set of activities is about you demonstrating your understanding of the relationship between inclusive practice and diversity and equality; the relevant legislation and codes of practice that apply to your work, and the consequences of non-compliance. You will demonstrate your self-knowledge and that you know how to respect the beliefs, culture, values and preferences of others. You will show that you know how to support and challenge members of your team. BTEC Unit 12: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2., 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 Diploma Unit 3: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 3.3 Task 1 Your task is to prepare the text of a briefing note for the team that sets out the inclusive practice that is expected of them. The briefing note should say what you aim to do to ensure that awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion issues is raised (and maintained) and also say what you (and/or others) will do to support inclusive practice and challenge discrimination. The briefing note should cover: 1. Definition of the terms diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination, and how these are covered in legislation and codes of practice that apply to social care. Explain the link between inclusion and the other terms. Complete the following table. Terms Definition How covered in law and codes Link to inclusion Diversity Equality Inclusion Discrimination 68 M0_HASC_WB_BTEC_032_U0.indd 68 04/0/ :27

2. The importance of inclusion, for instance how it is central to person-centred values, and the potential effects of discrimination. You should cover both the individuals that are suffering discrimination and the consequences for workers and organisations of breaking the law/codes. 1. The importance of inclusion is: 2. The effects of discrimination on individuals are: 3. The consequences for workers of breaking the law/codes are: 4. The consequences for the organisation of the breaking law/codes are: 69

BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Health & Social Care 3. Think of some examples relevant to your service where you can compare inclusive and non-inclusive practice. Complete the following table. Example Inclusive practice Non-inclusive practice e.g. Food available at residential home 4. Actions to raise awareness and promote diversity, equality and inclusion and challenge discrimination. 1. What you and others in the organisation will do to raise awareness and support people to promote diversity, equality and inclusion. 70 M0_HASC_WB_BTEC_032_U0.indd 70 04/0/ :27

2. What you and others in the organisation will do to challenge discrimination. (This should be actions that will promote change, not simply punish people.) Task 2 The following activities help you demonstrate that you understand how legislation and codes of practice relating to equality, diversity and discrimination apply to your own work role, and that you have a level of self-awareness that you use in your interactions with others so that you offer them respect for their beliefs, culture, values and preferences. Your task is to reflect on your life history and identify your cultural background, your values, your beliefs and your preferences that may influence your approach to following the legislation and codes of practice that apply to someone in your work role. You should then write an account of how these things may affect your working practices and what you do to make sure that your interactions with individuals respect their beliefs, culture, values and preferences. Work through the following sub-tasks to build your reflective account. 71

BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Health & Social Care Task 2a Complete the following table about how legislation and codes of practice relating to equality, diversity and discrimination apply to your work role. List of legislation/code of practice relevant to equality, diversity and discrimination e.g. Human Rights Act 1998 BTEC Unit 11: 1.4 Unit 12: 2.3 Diploma Unit 24: 2.3 Aspect of my history How this applies to my role e.g. I need to allow individuals freedom to go where they wish except where there is a legal order that restrains them Task 2b Write a reflective account about your own history and how things that are true about you may affect your working practices. Brief points about my history How this history may affect my working practice Cultural background Experiences Values Beliefs Preferences 72 M0_HASC_WB_BTEC_032_U0.indd 72 04/0/ :27

BTEC Unit 12: 2.4 Task 2c Complete the spider diagram to show what you do to respect individuals beliefs, culture, values and preferences. In each space provide an example of what you do in practice. Culture Beliefs Preferences Values 73

4 EVIDENCE GATHERING In this activity you will gather evidence from your work of how you demonstrate inclusive practice and how you support and challenge others to do the same. Your assessor will help you to identify suitable items of evidence. Your assessor will want to see the evidence but may not need you to copy it as long as the evidence and its location are identified. You need to gather evidence of activity within areas of your work to demonstrate: a. That when you interact with individuals you respect their beliefs, culture, values and preferences in a way that models inclusive practice, and that you support others to promote equality and rights. Diploma Unit 3: 2.2, 3.1, 3.2 Suggested evidence may include: witness testimony from a colleague who observes your practice witness testimony from a colleague or team member who has observed or been party to support and challenge team minutes, team briefing papers, supervision notes with sufficient detail to show the nature of any support and challenge. 74
