Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 1 Project #1 CAREER DECISIONS AND JOB SEARCH Scenario: You are getting ready to graduate and begin the next phase of your life. You are not entirely sure what you want to do career wise. You have considered furthering your education, but you have also considered going directly into the job market. You decide to research some of your career choices to see what, if any, advanced degrees or special training are required. TASKS 1-1 RESEARCH CAREER POSSIBILITIES 1-2 RESEARCH QUALIFICATIONS AND POSITIONS AVAILABLE 1-3 LOCATE ELECTRONIC RESUME (E-RESUME) GUIDELINES 1-4 POST ELECTRONIC RESUMES 1-5 FIND TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT
Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 2 TASK 1-1 RESEARCH CAREER POSSIBILITIES Take care when using information from the Internet. You should always attempt to verify the accuracy of information, especially if you cannot confirm the source of the information. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, a division of the U.S. government, has available extensive information about all types of careers. This information is compiled in a publication entitled Occupational Outlook Handbook which is revised every two years. This publication is available online at Information includes a description of what people in an occupation do, the working conditions, the training and education needs, the earnings, and the expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations. Figure 1.1 Go to the web site, and browse the categories to choose four careers you might like to pursue. Using the table on the next page, provide the information requested for those careers. 2 Project 1

You need to determine the qualifications and characteristics most employers are looking for in these positions. Figure 1.2 Career Decisions and Job Search 3
Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 4 Many sites on the Internet provide databases of job postings. Use the Internet to find a minimum of five positions in your career interests that list desired qualifications, location of job, and salary offered. Job Search Job Listings Position Qualifications Job Location Annual Salary Categorizing your bookmarks will assist you as your collection of bookmarked sites grows. In these postings, what desired personal qualifications were listed most frequently?»job SEARCH SITE Internet Address: TASK 1-3 Description: LOCATE ELECTRONIC RESUME (E-RESUME) GUIDELINES You have decided to post an e-resume to see if you receive any interest in your qualifications for a job. It is important to know that an effective e-resume is not identical to an effective traditional resume. Locate and print out e-resume guidelines from two different sources, and answer the questions on the next page. List the web address for each source. 4 Project 1 Electronic Resumes Online Resumes E-Resumes

Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 6 TASK 1-4 POST ELECTRONIC RESUMES You have decided to use the guidelines you located to build and post an e-resume. Now you want to find three sites where you can post the e-resume. Provide the site addresses where you can build an e-resume, and answer the questions below about each site. Electronic Resume Posting Online Resumes E-resumes 1. Is registration required for using the site to build an e-resume? 2. Do you need any special software for using the site? 3. Can you use the e-resume you build to search the site for jobs? 4. How much does it cost to post your e-resume? 5. How long will your e-resume stay posted? 7 Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 7 TASK 1-5 FIND TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT As you explore your educational and career options, you decide to seek employment with a temporary agency. This will allow you to observe various types of work environments and career areas. Using the Internet, find the names of three temporary employment agencies.»temporary EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES Internet Address: Description: Career Decisions and Job Search 7
Pr01.qxd 5/9/03 8:41 AM Page 8 Internet Research challenge: Most people want to maximize their earning potential. They can accomplish this through specialized training, higher education, or additional experience or skills development. Using the online Occupational Outlook Handbook or other online sources, prepare a one- to two-page report that compares and contrasts the median annual earnings of various careers based on the educational requirements of the job (i.e., accountant, plumber, pharmacist, electrician, beautician, fire fighter, or teacher). Your report should include at least one career for each of the following: no degree, a high school degree, a technical degree, an undergraduate college degree, and an advanced college degree.
