Objective To prepare documents that demonstrate your education, experience and skills in preparation for a job search Resume Electronic Resume Curriculum Vitae Cover letter References
Questions To Ask Yourself Why is it important for you to know what you want before seeking employment? Professionally Financially Culturally Why is it important to learn as much as you can about a company before seeking employment?
Seeking Employment Focus on job positions for which you are qualified Research the company to determine if you will be a potential fit or benefit based upon History/Success of business Strategic plan Mission/Values of the Company Your areas of strength and areas of growth/opportunities
Curriculum Vitae (CV) A CV is a fairly detailed overview of your life s accomplishments, especially those most relevant to the realm of academia. A CV has is appropriate when pursuing a job in academia or research. A typical CV will include the following information: Name and Contact Information Areas of Interest Education Grants, Honors and Awards Publications and Presentations Employment and Experience Scholarly or Professional Memberships References
Résumé and Electronic Resume A resume is a general and concise introduction of your experiences and skills as they relate to a particular career or position that you are aiming to acquire. Resume Types: A Print Version, designed with bulleted lists, italicized text, and other highlights, ready to print and mail or hand to potential contacts and interviewers. A Plain Text Version, a plain text file ready to copy and paste into online forms or post in online resume databases. This might also be referred to as a Text-Only copy.
Résumé Format 1-2 pages in length Content Can include a comprehensive history; typically period beginning with undergraduate school Describe achievements, not job description Keep narrative information to 1-3 phrases; use bullet points A resume may have to be customize for each position that you are applying for so as to emphasize those skills and experiences most relevant to the work. Use reverse chronological format (most recent to past) Always review for misspellings and other typographical errors
Organizing Résumé Résumé Main headings Career Objective Education Work Experience (3 or 4 positions) Clinical Experience (3 or 4 experiences) Community/Service Involvement, Presentations, Awards, Memberships, Continuing Education Headings can be combined Certifications and Licenses, Honors and Awards, Awards and Achievements Use anticipated graduation May 2017 (for example) if you have not graduated yet Clean up your Facebook, My Space, Twitter accounts Webpage content can remain online and visible for over 90 days Visit websites and Microsoft Office for resume templates and tips
Résumé Content Résumé Spell out all abbreviations and acronyms Keep format consistent throughout resume Refer to your diploma which indicates your level of degree and field of study Bachelor of Science in. or Master of Science in. For current program, use Anticipated or Expected Graduation date (May 2018) Do not discredit what you have accomplished Positions held Describe primary responsibilities and what you accomplished Clinical Affiliations Include the name of the organization and the setting (outpatient, inpatient acute, long-term care, etc.)
Additional Tips Résumé Use active verbs Use active tense for current positions Use past tense for past events Avoid repeating the same words (thesaurus) Check and re-check spelling (without spell check)
Things to Avoid Indicating your age, gender, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, pregnancy status, credit status or disability on an application or a resume Exceptions: May ask if you are over 18 years of age May ask if you can perform essential job duties which are noted on the job description Attaching a picture Including information not related to career path
Cover Letter Cover letters usually accompany a resume or C.V. to highlight interest in the position and fit for the position When writing a cover letter: Use same font and font size as resume Explains why you are sending a resume Indicate how you learned about the employment opportunity Tell potential employer why you are interested in the organization and position Indicate that you would like the opportunity for an interview Indicate what you will do to follow-up
References: Your references are individuals who know you fairly well and who can vouch for your ability to work hard and do well at a position for which you are applying. Identify 3-5 potential references Individuals that supervised you in an academic, work or volunteer experience Avoid family, friends or social acquaintances In almost all cases, you will NOT submit references with your resume/cover letter. Have a list prepared to provide upon request.
Job Applications Résumé and Job Applications Research the company in order to communicate how you or your history will enhance the company/be compatible with the company Keep information on resume and job application consistent Check dates, references, names, etc. Do not write see resume on the job application Do not leave any blanks on the job application Use N/A Do not write negative or adverse employment information Use legible font and font size
Tips for Responding by The fastest way to respond to Internet job listings is to your cover letter and resume to the person or organization if option is available Use the right Subject. "Seeking employment" is not an acceptable subject. If you are responding to an advertisement, use the job title or job code cited in the advertisement to make it easy for your to be recognized and routed to the appropriate person. Always send your cover letter and resume in the body of the message, not as an attachment, unless stated otherwise. This technique helps you get through systems that reject all attachments and monitor for computer viruses. Make sure your resume is properly formatted for . Plain text resumes not formatted for can be unreadable. This means shorter text lines, spacing between sections, and text-based highlights.
Applying Online More employers are utilizing online applications Better management of application process Allows applicant to create a profile Saves time when applying for more than one job opening Provides employer with an applicant pool for other openings Job seeker can initiate job search
