1 SCOTTY HIGHLANDER Street Address City, STATE Zip RESUME GUIDE UCR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 3701 Canyon Crest Dr., Riverside, CA 92521

3 Understand & Define BRAND Resume LinkedIn Network Interview Negotiate INTRODUCTION There are currently two main career branding platforms: the resume and the LinkedIn profile. This guide will highlight UCR Alumni Career resume best practices and then take you through step by step instructions to building a great resume. BEST PRACTICES There are four key elements to any successful resume. They are: 1. A clear career brand 2. A defined target 3. Accurate use of keywords 4. A results focus CAREER BRAND Commercial branding inspires trust in the consumer. The same goes for your professional brand. Does your resume inspire trust in potential employers? There are three key components to a professional or career brand: Professional identity- who are you? Skills and Background- as it relates to the specific company and position Results- your value proposition DEFINED TARGETED The best resumes have a defined theme that signals a clear career intent. In other words when scanned, a cohesive picture emerges that is targeted towards a specific industry and function. A resume should not read as an all-inclusive biography of everything you have done (and thus differs from a Curriculum Vitae). Highlight (by placing first) key skills or experiences and exclude or play down aspects of past work experience that are unrelated to your target. If job hopping or attempting a drastic career change, it may be that a functional format- a layout that highlights certain skills or functional areas will allow you to create a clear theme and emphasize transferable skills and strengths (see sample functional resume on the last page of this guide). KEYWORDS Use key words and terminology from intended job descriptions, industry associations and industry or career related discussion forums (LinkedIn Groups) to display your industry understanding as well as to make sure you come up in applicant tracking systems (especially in large organizations). ACTION-CONTEXT- RESULT When crafting experience bullets, most resumes focus on the action undertaken (past tense) and the context in which they take place (think about who, how many, what, where), but pay very little attention to what that work resulted in. The best bullets follow an ACTION-CONTEXT-RESULT format that clearly shows the employer what you accomplished. FINAL DETAILS & LENGTH It should go without saying that the document should be proofread multiple times, not contain any errors or typos and be visually pleasing with adequate white space to allow for easy reading. Stick with widely used fonts (Cambria, Georgia, Tahoma etc.) no larger than 12 and make sure to write experience section in bullet format. Finally, we recommend the document be one page, unless a highprofile executive with over 20 years of experience.
4 SCOTTY HIGHLANDER Street Address City, STATE Zip TARGET SIGNALED IN SUMMARY SUBSTANTIATED BY PROGRESSIVE BULLETS= CLEAR THEME Educator and Developer (PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY) with eight years experience as High School classroom English teacher in complex urban setting. Expert skills in curriculum development that provides instruction supported by standards, aligning technology with pedagogy, assessment best practices, classroom management and peer mentorship (SKILLS/BACKGROUND). Student learning under leadership indicates improved literacy and grades (RESULTS). Technology Integration Curriculum implementation Curriculum creation and implementation Differentiated instruction & assessment EXPERIENCE RIVERSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT- RIVERSIDE HIGH Riverside, CA 10 th Grade Teacher 2011-present Created (ACTION) two vlog and blog based language arts curricula for grades 10 and 11 (CONTEXT- HOW MANY? WHAT? WHEN?) to meet Expected Schoolwide Learning Results for Eastern Association of Schools and Colleges 2015/16 accreditation (RESULT). ACTION-CONTEXT-RESULT IS CLEAR AND LANGUAGE/KEYWORDS USED DISPLAYS INDUSTRY UNDERSTANDING STEP BY STEP HEADER Ensure the address is permanent/updated simple and professional (avoid silly or slang addresses); Your address should not expire Could link to your customized LinkedIn profile or professional website PROFESSONAL SUMMARY UTILIZE THESE COMPONENTS: Professional identity Skills and background and Results/Value Proposition Followed by a list of core competencies SIGNALS CLEAR INTENT Scotty Highlander s career target (in the above example) is obvious- education (industry) and teacher (function) but should Edmund seek a position that is with the school district administration office in management, how could he use the same information to signal a different target? Eight-year career as educational professional and practitioner (professional identity). Possess conceptual tools foundational to understanding education, experience handling complex social and educational challenges in the urban setting (skills and background) and management competencies to achieve sustainable organizational change at school and administrative level (result). Scotty would follow this professional summary with an experience section that focuses (by placing first) all his experience that is more administrative and managerial and nature. This signals to the reader that his target industry is still education but his target function is administrative/managerial in nature.
5 EXPERIENCE SENSE OF PROGRESSION The experience section is the most important part of the resume. While the professional summary gives the reader a sound bite of who you are at the outset, the experience section is the meat of the resume and should occupy most of the page (at least two thirds). There are two main aspects: Past performance displayed in reverse chronological order (most recent to least recent work) Logical career decisions that display a sense of progression Month and years of employment. If concerned about job gaps- either only include year or see functional resume example (page X) BE CONCRETE Never use Responsible for at the outset of experience bullets. See the following example for the clear use of ACTION-CONTEXT- RESULT as compared to without. Responsible for being liaison between customer and sales management (no A-C-R) Coordinated (Action) between 5 key customer accounts and sales management team (Context is detailed and gives reader an idea of scope), increasing market share of petroleum product line by 25% and return business by 50% (Result). EDUCATION DEGREE Write degree in full- Master of Science, Bachelor of Arts. If degree is general include specialization or emphases Month and year of graduation. For older alumni can simply include year. RELEVANCE Only include information relevant to current career objectives. For those with 10 to 15 years of experience, information concerning academic or leadership performance is of little value. For recent graduates, student leadership roles, volunteer activities and academic recognition may be included. ADDITIONAL The final section of the resume should include: Technical skills, software International experience or language proficiency Professional organizations/memberships; Leadership and volunteer experience No irrelevant information (children s names; your age)
