These include services delivered physically, like those provided in workshops, as well as digital services delivered through connectivity. One is the latest example of how is taking the lead in digitalisation to assist customers in achieving profitability. Regardless of the application that you operate in and the operating conditions that you are forced to deal with, smart services that support operations and ownership are a critical factor in achieving sustained profitability, says Björn Fahlström, Vice President, Product Management, Trucks. In today s competitive environment, the transport companies who emerge as winners are those who choose our services because they can expect everything from higher uptime, to increased cost control and a better night s sleep. Digital sales channel One is a digital sales channel that provides quick and easy access to s service offering. One is built around Ericsson software that allows for seamless integration and provision of both s own services and those from other parties, via Android tablets. Savings through connectivity Another area in which was an industry pioneer and today continues to have a leading role is around opportunities for the use of digitalisation to optimise vehicle fuel consumption. s Cruise Control with Active Prediction (CCAP) system has for many years contributed to s customers being able to shrink their fuel bills something that been documented in numerous press tests conducted by independent journalists. The system uses topographical map data and GPS technology to determine the make-up of the road three kilometres ahead and choose gearing and speed strategies that allow for the lowest possible fuel consumption. s CCAP system allows the vehicle to use satellites to look three kilometres ahead. The vehicle uses advances algorithms to calculate how it for instance can use its kinetic energy to Eco-roll with the gears in neutral. With the latest iteration of the system, engineers have increased the opportunities for drivers to influence how the system operates and have further finetuned the algorithms used, in order to draw additional benefits from functions such as Eco-roll (which is when the vehicle rolls in neutral) and s low-rev philosophy. The changes involve utilising the kinetic energy of the vehicle even more efficiently on hilly roads. In the latest iteration, the truck uses greater intelligence to calculate with even greater precision and in more situations how to take advantage of its own mass and the road s elevation changes. 3 3 (5) One further development is that the truck can now predict when it makes sense to begin a descent at a slightly lower speed than was previously theoretically viable. It s also able to use Eco-roll to coast more often and for longer, without needing to brake and disperse the accumulated energy because the speed has become too high further down the hill. Obviously, the driver never has to consider these strategic choices; the truck handles it all with unrelenting precision. The latest iteration of s adaptive cruise control system has more individual adjustment options. The driver can decide to what degree he or she accepts the speed being lowered to save fuel on uphill stretches, in two different driving modes. Pulse & Glide Another change is that is increasing the possibilities for adjusting the lower speed range used by the system. The driver can now, within certain limits, determine how far down into the speed range the truck sits in Standard Mode (with a minimum two percent speed reduction). This helps address the perceived need among drivers to increase speed themselves using the accelerator and also deals with the risk of drivers choosing not to use the system. A third advance relating to how the system works in s new generation of trucks is that it now uses a principle that calls Pulse & Glide. Essentially, this involves being able to use Eco-roll even on gradients that under normal circumstances aren t steep enough to maintain speed. By being able to increase speed Pulse and then freewheel Glide the collective time that the vehicle uses Eco-roll can be considerably increased. On suitable stretches of road, the new function alone can contribute to fuel savings of up to 0.5 percent. It should be noted that it is hard to tell the precise extent of the total savings produced by Eco-roll. That s because in practice factors such as how hilly the road is and the distance between peaks and valleys come into play. But, under decent conditions, the savings will always amount to at least one percent and in some cases significantly more. In s own tests, there were examples of routes where fuel savings of up to seven percent were achieved for a 40-tonne combination, with only modest time penalties. Flexible plans As part of last year s launch, Maintenance with Flexible Plans was also unveiled in Europe. The truck s connectivity software automatically indicates when it has a service need, prompting to contact the owner and determine a suitable time to carry out the job and any other preventative servicing. The reception has been extremely positive, says Lars Karlsson, Director Business Development, Parts & Services, Trucks. This service does away with mileage or calendar-determined maintenance plans and helps to reduce the number of days in the workshop when the truck is not working and therefore not generating income for its owner. It s a clear example of how a partnership with contributes to strengthening a transport company s total operating economy. Fleets managed by Fleet Care is yet another maintenance-related service recently introduced by. Like so many other things at, it is scalable due to it being built from modules. The basic concept involves undertaking to assume responsibility for part or all of the customer s maintenance plan. The goal is to increase the total uptime of the customer s fleet, while also increasing cost control and predictability. Transport operators realise that has deeper insights when it comes to maintenance planning, whereas their special competence and main interest lies in using the vehicle in an optimal way, says Karlsson. By outsourcing the planning of things like maintenance and preventative measures to a specialist, operators get working stability and higher uptime. More secure owners has a clearly-stated philosophy that every customer should have the requirements they need to achieve the best possible operating economy from their investment, with help from tailor-made solutions that always include both products and services. This also places demands on the customer and the salesperson; before anything is decided definitively, a whole range of conditions and goals need to be analysed. By not taking anything for granted such as not simply copying over the specification directly from an earlier that the customer has traded in can create a solution that is optimal for each customer s unique needs and conditions.
