5 Course Syllabus The following are some ground rules to help us maintain a steady progress through the semester: 1. Assignments are due at the start of the class period before the lecture begins. Assignments submitted after this time will receive a 20% deduction. A further 20% reduction will be applied for every week beyond the first. 2. The instructor will discuss any exam or assignment grade within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) of its return, after which time the discussion is closed. 3. Excellent teamwork can improve the course grade by as much as 4% (2% per design project). Poor team work will lower your grade by the same amount. 4. Punctual attendance is mandatory for all the class periods. Course grade will be dropped to the next lower grade for every two classes missed. All excused absences must be supported by written documentation, such as doctor's receipt, Penn State athletics travel notice, ROTC notice, etc. 5. No makeup labs will be available for the Design sessions since this is unique to this section. 6. No cell phone including text message is permitted in the classroom. 7. Students are responsible for any missed handout and homework assignment for any unexcused missed class. 8. Students must use Penn State access account address when he/she s the instructor. 9 First Design Project Description of the Design Task Problem Statement: The problem is that some people who do not have cars or live far away from the supermarket need a way to move groceries back to their homes. Mission Statement: Our mission is to create a shopping cart that is easy to use and store for consumers of all ages in order to assist them in the task of moving groceries from the supermarket to their place of residence. The cart itself must be sturdy, while also remaining sleek and lightweight and it must withstand up to 100 lbs of groceries. Design Specifications: 1. The shopping folding cart should be easy to use. 2. The shopping folding cart should be easy to fold compactly. 3. The cost should not exceed $50, unless it can be justified. 4. The shopping folding cart should have the capacity of 100 lbs. Image of the 3D solid Model 9

12 Main Design Features The only mechanism on this design is the folding process. The sides are the cart are secured by pins which allow the sides to rotate in place. During the folding process, the front of the cart will utilize this pin system by allowing each of the side pieces to move, allowing the front of the cart to move up so the cart may be able to fold (as shown in Figure No. 11). In the open position the cart will rest on the bottom front portion of the cart, with the weight of the cart itself holding it in place. 13 Second Design Project Description of the Design Task Problem Statement: Well drilling is a very involved and complex process. Part of this process involves a large supply of water for operations and fracking. This water needs to be stored onsite to be used for later use. The antiquated way of doing this is by digging a large impoundment pit for water storage. However, this method alters the landscape and presents potential problems for the surrounding area. A more sustainable and less disruptive alternative way is to have above ground storage containers. Mission Statement: In order to improve the current situation of water storage, it is our goal to design a sustainable above ground tank system that has the capability to store at least 3 million gallons of water on site with the consideration of safety, cost, schedule/cycle time, footprint size, load bearing/settlement, ease of fill, corrosion, constructability, transportation, materials, and other potential uses for them during/after their life span. Design Specifications: 1. Safe to use. 2. Suppose to be not expensive. 3. Able to load enough weight. 4. Easy to construct. 5. Easy to transport. 6. Have potential uses after life span. 16 Main design features 1.Reusing old decommissioned freight containers that would otherwise go to waste sitting somewhere. a.using the anti-corrosion and strength properties of the already-made freight container that will assist with corrosion resistance and wall strength when under a load. 2.Using plastic pond liner to line the freight container to ensure leak free water storage. 3.Using labor to make some minor alterations to the freight container to make it useful as a mass water storage tank. a.fill Port Alteration: Adding a port to the top of the container that is used for pumping water into the tank. b.exit Port Alteration: Adding a port to the side of the freight container that is used for pumping water out of the tank. c.plastic Liner Alteration: Must line the container with plastic pond liner to ensure leakage free water storage. i.alternative: The freight container could be patched, welded, and inspected for water tight seals. The freight container could then hold the liquid bare and the plastic liner would not be needed. d.anti-freezing Alterations: The addition of a compartment for a battery (unless using an external electricity source) and a space for the thermal heaters or an electric powered motor to prevent the contents from freezing in cold environments. It may also be possible to insulate the container to help prevent freezing. 17 Summary In EDSGN 100, I learned a lot about engineering drawings and designs, and I did a lot of practices and projects and made some progress through those projects and practices. This course has brought me into the field of engineering and let me understand how to design things and how is engineering like. 17
