Managing and Standardization in Passenger trains The Platform Approach André Thibault Head of Mass Transit Platforms Bombardier Transportation St-Bruno, Québec, Canada
Agenda 1 INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXT 2 PLATFORMS: VALUE FOR OPERATORS AND CAR BUILDERS 3 VARIABILITY MANAGEMENT (PLE&VM) 4 KEY TAKE AWAY
Passenger Rail Vehicle Market Same Needs different requirements and products! Rail Vehicles appear to be highly standardized at high level Mainline Railroads are typically standardized within a country but cross continental and global standardization remains a challenge. Urban Rail Vehicles (Metros, Light Rail, Monorail) have even further custom elements due to urban infrastructure and individual city requirement which dictates the size, performance and even functionality of trains.
Management is a must to develop meaningful Standards! Variants: why? Specific Infrastructure & Operation Reqt's New technology push & Obsolescence Lack of experiences transfer across users Lack of industry standards & certification Value of Std Standard all the same Standard + Service Proven = more reliable + short lead time to deliver Standard + Product Planning = Lower risk + customer specific
Examples of Standards The PCC Car: A Standard with little customization possible. 1 ERTMS as a global Signaling standard with flexibility to adapt to each country rules. More than track km have ERTMS. Approximately 2900 vehicles are fitted with ERTMS 1: source ERTMS.net
Car Builders and Operators Common Challenges Safe Trains On Time High Reliability Competitive Costs Technology Push Low Risk What is the Solution to these common Challenges?

Platform and Product Management Product Family A (e.g. Aventra) PLATFORM Subsystems Processes Interfaces Scalable solutions Product Family N (e.g. OMNEO) Modular Building Blocks can be Subsystems (Brakes, HVAC, Doors), scalable Solutions (Windows), Software Modules (TCMS), CTC etc. It is a characteristic that these building blocks can typically be re-used within different platforms and products based on defined architectures and interfaces (mechanical, electrical, functional). Platform is the technical basis of standardized solutions on which different Product Families are created from. A Platform is not a Product which can be sold. It is a set of assets, rules, concepts and sub-systems A Product Family is an group of similar products with pre-defined and standardized characteristics. Some are Universal or core across the family others are selected from alternatives and options. Product 1 (e.g. Crossrail) Product 2 (...) Product n ( ) Product 1 Product 2 Product n Within a Product Family different Products are instantiated. These include the core elements as well as alternatives and options that make them unique when configured for a customer. 10

M.Forlingieri, M.Chami ISC/TCMS Rev.1.3 PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL Bombardier Inc. or its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. Management Challenges & Goals Three main Challenges with respective Goals The main goal is to develop and manage product families in order to generate products with decreased cost and time to market. Challenge Goal Complex product portfolio with little commonality Manage commonality and variability to maximize re-use, improve delivery and reliability. Opportunistic, isolated reuse (copy paste) and high nonrecurring engineering Managed integrated reuse of features and assets* in order to reduce non-recurring engineering Concurrent engineering and knowledge transfer More Efficient concurrent engineering and collaboration 13 * Assets: Requirements, use cases, test cases, components etc..

M.Forlingieri, M.Chami ISC/TCMS Rev.1.3 PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL Bombardier Inc. or its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. Management at Bombardier Transportation Management Method at glance The Bombardier Management Method describes how engineers define, analyze and configure variability of product families in order to generate multiple custom products by reducing risk and time to market while allowing fast and more precise customization for individual projects.. The Management Method consists of three main tasks. They deliver the product line variability models, their analysis results and generate application configurations respectively Definition Analysis Configuration Management Method benefits: Reduce risk and cost (i.e., design, development and review cost) Increase reusability of Building Blocks (Concepts, Architectures and Parts) Optimize communication among key stakeholders (e.g. Sales and Eng.) Improve reliability growth and performance predictability. 15

Management Additional Benefits Example for Traceability between Features and SW Requirements The variability model elements are linked to the different assets elements. For instance, the traceability between features and SW requirements can be represented and used during any future change analysis. Requirement Text FnC Feature SRS Req. ID GIVEN the train speed is lower then [tbd] WHEN the conductor or driver triggers OR ATO the request to release all external doors of the train side selectively, THEN the train shall release all external doors of the train side selectively. Traceability between Features Model and SW Requirements in DOORS Train External Doors Release Train External Doors Release Req 0051 Req 0060 SRS Text WHEN the TrainSpeed is less than the RelSpeedLimit, THEN the TCMS Application SW shall set the CentralRelCmdEnabled GIVEN the CentralRelCmdEnabled is set, AND the CentralRelCmdByDrv is set, AND the CabIsActive is set, AND (optionaly) drive-brake lever is set to "zero position" WHEN the DRS_RqstCentralRel is activated for a side of the train, THEN the TCMS Application SW shall set the DRS_CmdCentralRel on the side which is pre-selected (DRS_CmdPreSelSideRel) AND requested (DRS_RqstCentralRel). 25
Agenda 1 INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXT 2 PLATFORMS: VALUE FOR OPERATORS AND CAR BUILDERS 3 VARIABILITY MANAGEMENT (PLE&VM) 4 WHY IS VARIABILITY MANAGEMENT VALUABLE TO OPERATORS?
Key Presentation Take-Away 1. Standard does not mean being locked-in with rigid specification not meeting the needs of operators. 2. Operators performance and functional requirements expressed well ahead RFP: A new approach to procurement! 1. Typical in new Systems PPP projects where focus is not on vehicle details 2. Vehicle replacement: not based specific solutions of older fleet 3. Provisions for future functions constrained with limited variability & clearly defined. 4. Platforms are possible only when future market reqt s can be predicted 5. Platform design and Modeling are key methods to: 1. Flexible and modular vehicle designs to increase customer value 2. Faster delivery times and reliability (out of the box!) 3. Improved obsolescence management 4. Improve communication of vehicle features to Customers ahead of purchase 5. Configure products quickly with limited risk of omission or creating impossiblities
Platform Development requires Insight on Market Requirements! But it s no Magic Just Hard work & communication!
