UIC ERTMS/ETCS Platform field of activities The UIC ERTMS/ETCS Platform is a Body for the diffusion of the ERTMS experiences. The principal users and developer can exchange, by the platform, all the information concerning the whole system in order to improve the common understanding of the ERTMS specification and to contribute to a faster progress of the e related interoperable implementations. The Platform can operate as a sponsor of the ERTMS/ETCS application, ion, coordinating the railways initiative, helping the Bodies involved in the decision for the ERTMS financing, track side and on board. 2
UIC ERTMS/ETCS Platform field of activities Technically the Platform can manage or support, by the proper experts, tasks in the field of : - Selection of the Interfaces to standardize and definition of the e standards, - Choices for the on board architectures (RFI( will give a proposal based on its applications with evidence of the defined standard interfaces) - Formal languages for the specifications to minimize the ambiguities in the specifications, - Methods for the pragmatic approach to the cross testing (RFI will offer its experiences, laboratories and sites) - Preliminary indications for the operational rules harmonization,, derived from the interoperable applications already in operation (Rome-Naples HS line) - New possible architectures and transmission means (Centralized interlocking and RBC, Radio link solution more performing than GSM-R, etc.). - Costs reduction strategies, 3

Cost reduction strategy (EXAMPLE) The cost reduction could be realized at least by: Large scale (common call for tender for extensive international applications) Open market (well defined standards and competition in the offers) Common Certification process (with cross acceptance of the acceptance) for the constituents: and Common regulations Common education for the operation / maintenance 6
ERTMS/ETCS UIC Platform RFI proposal Creation of Interoperability Support Group (Technical and Operational Railway Experts) at least among the corridor A countries (Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy) Mission to support railways and industry in order to achieve, in particular for the corridor Rotterdam Genoa, the technical and operational interoperability, using the experiences from the first implementations. Basic tasks "Cross-interoperability" (between different suppliers) starting from the ETCS integration of different suppliers in Italy (ASF-ALS), Netherlands (Siemens-Alcatel-Alstom-Bombardier), Switzerland (Alstom - Siemens) and Germany (Siemens Alcatel) Objective: to build a framework of interoperability test cases to discover generic specification problems and specific products' implementation problems (in railway concern). Formal methods application for the next UNISIG versions of the specs to limit incongruence, ambiguities, missing indications Objective: to minimize errors and criticalities in the specs interpretation. 7
ERTMS/ETCS UIC Platform RFI proposal Interoperability Support Group tasks - areas covered : 1. Technical specification 2. Functional interoperability assessment 3. Operational rules for the interoperable operations (state of the art, referred to the application already in operation, as the RFI HS applications, with evidence of the introduced modification and integrations of the specifications and the used functionalities with the related kind of operation). 8
ERTMS/ETCS UIC Platform RFI proposal Interoperability Support Group starting activity : The first activity to be planned (for implementing a methodology) should be the definition of the test activities, in laboratory and in field, for the interoperability of RBC with EVC (e.g.: Alstom-ASF ASF etc. with Siemens-Alcatel etc) in the target environment. The aim will be to check the real functionalities implemented in different suppliers product. The method to apply should be to harmonize different suppliers interpretation of the specifications to the ones adopted in the applications already in operation. This job requests the collaboration of the involved suppliers. By this pragmatic approach the cross functionality of the assemblies produced by different UNISIG suppliers can be more easily achieved, as demonstrated in the RFI Applications, realized by the subsystems of different suppliers. 9
ERTMS/ETCS UIC Platform RFI proposal Interoperability Support Group starting activity : Other fundamental activities managed by this group are: Harmonization of the assessment and approval processes and Certification Comparison of the referenced specifications (version and eventual additional specific points, compliant with the European specifications in force (see slide)) Indications on the constraints to fulfil in the contracts with the suppliers for the implementation of the interoperable solution in the corridors 10
ERTMS/ETCS UIC Platform RFI proposal The specification versions mangement Independently from the Agency process for the specs version management, a very important help to the users, in particular for the corridor application, is the indication by each railway of which specs used in its previous application with the detailed information on special national choices. The group shall manage the filling of the scheme below introducing all the detailed information in order to put in evidence its own state of art and the next planned steps: SRS RFI adopted specs changes compliant with Subset 108 SRS SRS RFI SBB DB Prorail 11
