3 1. Definition of Terms PERFORM operating document (POD) Protocol Users Supervisor Instructor Internship Student Modality Operating documents that are specific to an instrument or technique. Methods that are developed by users on specific instruments/equipment. Person using space or equipment at the PERFORM Centre that has received adequate technical and safety training. Knowledgeable person regarding all or an aspect of a project or program and is familiar with PERFORM's best practices that is responsible for ensuring that junior users conduct their activities in a safe manner and within scope of the project. Person that has attained an adequate level of certification and expertise which qualifies them to supervise and teach students. A current student or recent graduate that is undergoing supervised practical training supervised by PERFORM employees. A method of application of or employment of any therapeutic agent, especially a physical agent that involves the physical treatment of a disorder. 2. Introduction The Athletic Therapy Clinic has a Chattanooga Wireless Professional stims modality. This POD is designed to outline the use, maintenance schedule and training needs for the Chattanooga Wireless Professional. This POD only covers the use within the Athletic Therapy Clinic and within the Scope of Practice for Athletic Therapists. PC-POD-AT-008-v03 Printed copies are not controlled. Page 3 of 5

Chattanooga Wireless Professional stims modality 3.1 Installation Instructions: No formal installation is required other than plugging in the machine to charge. 3.2 Maintenance Schedule: The unit should be cleaned daily with a soft cloth and alcohol based solvent free cleaning product The unit and remote controller should not be stored for long periods of time with empty batteries. 3.3 Contraindications The Chattanooga Wireless will be used during treatments done in the clinic where this modality is warranted. Contraindications are as follows: Cardiac stimulator (pacemaker) Epilepsy Pregnancy (do not use on abdominal area) Any serious arterial circulation problems in lower limbs Abdominal or inguinal hernia Do not use on patients with cardiac arrhythmia Do not apply electrodes close to metal, jewelry or piercings or any other metal within the area of stimulation Note: Osteosynthesis Equipment: The presence of osteosynthesis equipment (metallic equipment in contact with bone, pins, screws, plates, prostheses, etc.) is NOT a contraindication. 5 4. Safety Measures: 4.1 Never begin an initial stimulation on a client who is standing. The first five minutes must be performed on someone sitting or lying down as a vasovagal reaction may occur in rare instances. 4.2 Do not use the modality within one metre of short wave or microwave devices as this could alter the currents generated by the stimulator. 4.3 Portable communication devices can interfere with electrical medical equipment. 5. Training Requirements: The internship students from Concordia s Department of Exercise Science have completed a required course in modalities as well as a teaching lab. All modalities used in the clinic are covered in both of these semester long sessions. The Chattanooga Wireless is in the family of Stims modalities and as such no special training other than a general orientation to the specific machine is needed as it is approved under the Athletic Therapy Scope of practice.
