13 The connections are subject to vertical and horizontal actions, as for example their own weight, wind and seismic actions, and for this reason they must be designed and checked to transmit all the stress actions, to prevent sinkings or settlements not expected in the design phase. Once the architectural design phase is ended, LegoCad allows to analyze and to position the connections that fix the structural precast elements to each other. Connections loaded in LegoCad can be commercial connections or user defined connections. Only in specific situations (non standard connections) the inserts will be positioned one by one. LegoCad includes an archive of standard connections (commonly used in the market and used by concrete manufacturer) for the following connections: Footing Column Column Beam Beam Beam Beam Slab Panel Column Panel Beam Panel Slab Panel Panel Slab - Dome Panel - Panel 13

14 Once the user has defined the type of connection, LegoCad goes on by placing the respective inserts (boxes, profiles, ) on the different elements considering the manufacturer rules, also checking distances from elements, the capacity for suspension elements, any interference among different inserts. When restrictions are not respected LegoCad reports the error to the user. EXAMPLE OF PANEL-COLUMN CONNECTION Once the architectural design is ended, the user chooses, from the KNOTS menu, the connection typology be used, for example panel column (PAN-COL). Automatically all typologies on market and stored in the archive, are proposed. After choosing the connection, the user, driven step by step by the program, defines the elements where to apply the inserts. The program automatically positions the inserts, building the connection, on the panel and on the column. SHOP DRAWINGS Any change in the connection position on the architectural design will automatically updates the inserts position in the shop drawings. USER DEFINED CONNECTIONS In specific situations, where it is not possible to use commercial connections, it is possible to use generic connections defined by the user. BOQ LegoCad automatically generates both the connections list (BOQ) and the kit with the items needed on site for the erection. 14

PROBLEM BIM Sw. includes basic functions and generic macros, Designers can model with them, but the result is a lack of productivity and savings SOLUTION IS TO BUILD OWN BIM LIBRARY It is necessary to create both a Library and some customized macros with own types of Product (pieces, inserts/connections, reinforcements, cost rules). Helps the Designer in the Design choices, Allows a drastic reduction of errors, Speed up the Project development and variants, Provides all the information for Production, Erection and Cost Control. PROBLEM The development of the Library done by the User has always been a failure - The staff needs a wide range of skills (not only affecting the graphic design as we are accustomed to think) and a well defined working methodology. - It is unthinkable to create the library during the development of projects: the time is short and the functions (macros) to be set needs a general logic; at that time maybe it is not clear yet. 74

76 FAQ 1/2 1. How do I with the BIM, as my Projects are all different? Precast is a complex industry where all projects are different; therefore, it is necessary to define Guidelines with Design Criteria that take into account both of all the production issues, and of the equipments available (beds, bridge crane, transport, erection equipments); these criteria will be of great help for a quick and cost-saving implementation of the projects, even if they are all different. 2. We don t have these guidelines It is the good time to prepare the guidelines, CSG offers its expertise to define these Guidelines together with the Customer, also through the Design Outsourcing service. 76

Looking at the high abandonment rate of all other BIM systems in Precast Industry, we believe that the difference is just in the approach that we propose to the Customer: take one step at a time with the certainty of being able to accompany him to close the cycle of the Automated Business Management. 77
