3 What is EDN The Electronic Despatch Note allows hospital to access their delivery information via a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) message that can be "picked up" from the NBS. The message gives standard issue information on the donation number, the product, the blood group and the expiry date. It also contains confirmed/unconfirmed phenotype information.

4 History EDN has been available since 2006 Hospitals with the following LIMS can use EDN Telepath Apex Clinisys Cerner ( Fujistu ) WinPath beta testing March 2010

5 EDN Process Issues allocate stock to a hospital This generates a message which is imported by the hospital for use in its information system The hospital physically receives the stock and enters the order number from the delivery note. The hospital wands in the donation number and product code for each unit. The remaining unit information is retrieved from the EDN message automatically

6 Benefits of Using EDN Rapid input of stock data onto LIMS Simple and easy to use Can use for blood and components Additional information available eg phenotyping details Allows you to search your stock for selected units Warnings if inappropriate blood selected site specific Logging if blood is selected against software s recommendations site specific Enables audit that appropriate blood products were issued.

7 Requirements to enable use of EDN - 1 Logins to the NBS EDN ftp site are required Ability to import files from NHSBT Two stage process Access files from the NHSBT server via ftp Software on the LIMS to read the imported file

8 Requirements to enable use of EDN - 2 Sites may have to log on to the NHSBT server and ftp the files then import into the LIMS St Helier Site specific routine to ftp files into our LIMS Routine checks every 10 mins for any new files on the server

9 Requirements to enable use of EDN - 3 Validation of new software Preparation of laboratory documentation change control and validation records, SOP s, competency and training records

19 Choices Wand the unit number and product code of each unit delivered OR Allow import all system will upload all the unit information for the units on the delivery note which may not be the units delivered.

21 Safety Introduction of EDN allowed us to write a routine that checks the unit specifications against the patients special requirements eg K neg blood, CMV neg blood, Irradiated blood. This routine could be expanded to include checking patients antibody status against the unit phenotype.

22 Disadvantages Delivery note number is not always available to pick up from the server and therefore need to bar code all the unit information onto the LIMS. Rare Can be resolved by ringing Issues and asking them to dispatch on Pulse.
