2 Performance maintenance Goal This performance maintenance protocol is a guide to performing maintenance tasks on your system. Packaged as part of the performance maintenance kit, it is intended to ensure optimum performance and an uninterrupted period of trouble-free operation. Schedule Waters recommends that performance maintenance visits be performed once a year. Systems under heavy use or using aggressive solvents will need more frequent maintenance. For detailed maintenance schedules, refer to the appropriate operator s guide(s) located on the Waters web site. Failure to follow the maintenance schedules as described in the operator s guides may result in unreliable operation and inaccurate laboratory results. For some protocols, optional tests can be performed by Waters field service engineers for added confidence and reliability. Safety considerations Some protocols may involve removing instrument covers, exposing the performer to high voltages, high currents, and moving parts. This presents risks of electric shock and/or damage to the instrument. To reduce these risks, Waters recommends that these protocols be conducted by certified Waters field service engineers, who have access to the latest information on Waters products. Waters does not advise and is not responsible for an unqualified performer initiating actions that they do not understand. If there is any doubt on the part of the performer, a Waters certified field service engineer should conduct the performance maintenance activity. Waters Quality Parts Waters designs and manufactures Waters Quality Parts to the same strict regulatory standards (ISO 9001:2000, ISO 13485:2003, and CGMP) as your high-performance Waters systems. Waters recommends using Waters Quality Parts for all maintenance activities. Failure to use Waters Quality Parts may compromise laboratory results and reliability. 3 General tasks Use the following guidelines when conducting performance maintenance visits. This information is intended to be a guide only. For example: If a particular module has been recently serviced, it may need only testing and replacement of fewer parts. Not all procedures apply to all instruments (specify NA in the Comments section if the procedure does not apply). If the instrument fails to perform adequately during initial inspection, initialization diagnostics or after post-maintenance tests, further service may be required beyond the scope of this protocol. Such service may incur additional parts and labor charges. The following table lists the general tasks to be performed during a performance maintenance visit. For detailed instructions and a list of the necessary tools, refer to the Operator s Guide located on the Waters web site. Firmware upgrades may require re-qualification of the upgraded instrument if it is in a regulated environment. 2 Adjusted only by a Waters field service engineer, but can be checked in Console. 3 Checked/adjusted/replaced only by a Waters field service engineer. 4 The pneumatic regulator filter should be replaced when necessary. This filter is not included in the PM Kit. 5 Verified by Waters field service engineers only. Certain serial numbers require use of the Z tool. Adjust if necessary. 6 Perform this inspection if not replacing the IGUS E-Z Readychain. If replacing the Readychain cable, verify the settings as part of the post performance maintenance tasks. 7 Perform this post performance maintenance task only after replacing the IGUS E-Z Readychain cable. 8 Does not apply to ACQUITY H-Class Sample Organizers. 4 Inspect Firmware version 1. Confirm what firmware version is installed, and note it on the cover page. 2. Update if required. Firmware check complete... Fans Power supply fan 1. Observe the power supply fan on the rear of the Sample Organizer. 2. Ensure that the fan grate is clear of debris and dust. The fan should be blowing outward. 3. Clean if necessary. Power supply fan check complete... Circulating fan 1. Open the Sample Organizer door. 2. Observe the circulating fan found at the rear of the Sample Organizer compartment to see if it is turning. 3. 5 Internal air regulator pressure NOTE: The internal air regulator pressure must read 75 psi. Adjust if necessary. Internal air regulator pressure check complete... Shelf sag NOTE: Applies only to ACQUITY UPLC Sample Organizers, not H-Class. 1. Open the Sample Organizer door. 2. Observe the shelves to see that they are completely horizontal and aligned with one another. Shelf sag check complete... Storage shelf retainer Alignment of the transfer mechanisms are dependant on a LED and sensor self-alignment. This is highly dependant on the reflective metallic edge of the storage shelf retainer (spring metal device) on the back side of the shelf. 1. Remove the shelves form the Sample Organizer. 2. Locate the reflective area of the storage shelf retainer. NOTE: A good storage shelf retainer will be flush with the black shelf plate. NOTE: A damaged storage shelf retainer will have a gap between it and the black shelf plate. Any amount of gap constitutes a damaged shelf. Do not use any shelf with a damaged storage shelf retainer. 6 X/Y transfer shuttle speed From the ACQUITY Console: 1. In the System tree click Sample Organizer > Interactive display. 2. Click the Control icon on the right-side of the display. 3. Click either the X or Y shuttle in the display. The X or Y motor shuttle window appears. 4. In the shuttle window, move the shuttle away and click OK. Observe the time on the timer controls. The travel time should be one to two seconds. 5. Click the shuttle icon again and bring the shuttle to its Home position. Observe the travel time. It should be between 1 and 2 seconds 6. Repeat the process for the other shuttle. X/Y transfer shuttle speed check complete... Pass Fail Shelf sensor amplifier threshold settings NOTE: It is not necessary to verify shelf sensor threshold settings prior to replacing the IGUS E-Z Readychain. If replacement is part of the performance maintenance, verify the settings as part of the post performance maintenance tasks. Amplifier threshold settings for shelf sensor are verified... 7 Error logs 1. From the Run Samples window in Empower or the Inlet Editor window in MassLynx, click the ACQUITY Console icon in the Sample Manager control editor. 2. In the system tree click ACQUITY UPLC System. 3. Click on Logs to review error logs. Review error logs complete... 8 Maintenance tasks Air intake filter 1. Remove the drain tube from the air intake filter frame. 2. Pull the filter frame over the drain of the filter drain assembly. 3. Slide a new air filter and frame over the drain on the filter drain assembly. Air intake filter replaced... Battery Battery replaced... Replacing the IGUS E-Z readychain cable NOTE: Replace the IGUS E-Z Readychain cable every two years regardless of which style chain is in place. IGUS E-Z readychain replaced... Replacing the pneumatic regulator filter NOTE: Replace the pneumatic regulator as required. Pneumatic regulator filter replaced... Pass Fail Verify shelf sensor amplifier threshold settings NOTE: Perform only if the IGUS E-Z Readychain cable was replaced. Amplifier threshold settings for shelf sensor verified... Verify/adjust Z initialization sensor height NOTE: On Sample Organizers with serial numbers lower than A07UPO57M, you must replace the metal flag controlling the bottom Z sensor using the Z sensor and hard stop gauge kit (PN ). NOTE: On Sample Organizers with serial numbers lower than A07UPO57M, you must replace the upper and lower worm gear screws using the Z sensor and hard stop gauge kit (PN ). Z initialization sensor height verified... Verify/adjust XTS/YTS hard stops NOTE: The hard stop settings determine the proper distance between the XTS and YTS. This ensures proper transfer of sample plates from the Sample Organizer to the sample manager. NOTE: After setting the hard stops, you must verify proper transfer of the sample plates from the Sample Organizer to the sample manager. 10 Verifying/adjusting the hard stops complete... Verify plate transfer (get/put to sample manager test) 1. Power on the ACQUITY UPLC System. 2. Stock the Sample Organizer shelves with plates. NOTE: Be certain that all plates conform to SBS standards. Using non-conforming plates will jam the Sample Organizer. Also, all samples must be covered with Waters approved covers. 3. Enable control in the Interactive Display. 4. Scan and store the shelf layout. 5. From the Console, transfer a tray from the Sample Organizer shelf to the Sample Manager. 6. From the Console, transfer the tray from the Sample Manager back to the Sample Organizer. 7. Repeat the process for the remaining shelves. Plate transfer check complete.... Pass Fail Create log entries 1. In the ACQUITY UPLC Console, click on Sample Organizer in the system tree. 2. From the menu bar, click Maintain > Create log entry. The Create Log Entry dialog box appears. 3. Enter the operator s name, the date of the performance maintenance, the date the IGUS E-Z Readychain was last replaced, and any other comments.
