4 Brief History of Vince Lombardi in Green Bay He took over the team in 1959 in a time when Green Bay was one of the worst teams in the league In his rookie year he was named coach of the year In 1960 the Packers made it to the championship game and lost to Philadelphia Eagles In 1961 he started a new regimen After putting this in place, the team won 5 championships in 7 years, including the first two Superbowls Copyright Erie 1 BOCES All Rights Reserved 4
5 This is a football The legendary football coach Vince Lombardi was a firm believer that winning teams were the best at doing the fundamentals well. In fact, he would begin each season by pulling the team together, holding up a football, and saying, Gentlemen, this is a football. He would then go on to talk the team through the fundamentals of the game, even taking them out on the field to talk about the boundaries, the end zone, and that the goal was to get the football into the end zone. Pretty basic stuff, especially for professional athletes who had played the game for years and were the best of the best. But Coach Lombardi s instincts proved to be right. Over his nine years of coaching the Green Bay Packers, his team only finished third once (his first year), and took home a championship five times. In fact, his 1966 team won the first Super Bowl, thrashing the Kansas City Chiefs It s all about the fundamentals. So it is with Data. Copyright Erie 1 BOCES All Rights Reserved 3

7 Step #2 Create a Model To achieve the best data driven outcomes, the educators in a district need to know how their data system works. To accomplish this educators need to know their software systems and how they interact with each other. They also need to know who does what. Invite as many district administrators and building administrators to participate. Many districts do this on a regular basis with admin teams, councils, cabinets, etc. Even if you can t get everyone in the same meeting the process is still valuable to go through with smaller groups individually. At this meeting develop a district data system model by having the district personnel create it. To create this model use the developing and using models part of the NYSSLS science standards. 14 Facilitate the sharing of these individual models Starting with a volunteer, have each administrator share their individual models let them all share w/o interruption After everyone has shared their model allow for Q & A Revise your model based on inaccuracies that your colleagues have exposed in your model Be as accurate as possible 9 Copyright Erie 1 BOCES All Rights Reserved
15 Draw a collaborative Model As the facilitator, have the group create a district data model Again make sure they use the modeling protocol Once the model is produced, revisit the NYSSLS criteria for modelling to make sure it was followed Copyright Erie 1 BOCES All Rights Reserved 15

17 Step #3 Test the Model What if? Have a discussion using the collaborative model to see if any revisions are needed If there are any changes in the system, then the model needs to be revised Bring up scenarios to make sure the model is valid Copyright Erie 1 BOCES All Rights Reserved 17
