6 Bynum Bits ECS111 - INTRODUCTION TO CARRIER NETWORK CONTROLS This is a comprehensive course that provides entry-level as well as the experienced controls technician with the skills necessary to install, interface with and troubleshoot a Carrier Comfort Network. The course begins with a review of basic control theory followed by a discussion of the standard algorithms used to control typical HVAC systems. Network configuration options and requirements, CCN architecture and standard communications protocol will also be covered in detail. Students are then introduced to CCN family of standalone and networked controllers; learn their function within the network and how they are wired. The new handheld System Pilot as well as Network Service Tool V software is used to interface with selected training simulators to alter set point tables, occupancy schedules and monitor algorithm performance. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Identify major CCN modules and factory mounted PICs. Understand CCN architecture and rules for addressing devices. Understand the principles and major building blocks for CCN networks. Identify various algorithms for standard HVAC applications. Determine what points and schedules are required for algorithm execution. Synchronize network time and establish network broadcasters and acknowledgers. Operate the System Pilot hand held interface tool with a digital controller. Effectively use Network Service Tool V software to interface with a PIC. A cumulative score of 70% is required to pass this course. The score is a combination of attendance, class participation, and a demonstration of skills and knowledge through quizzes and/or work sessions. Suggested Prerequisites: Those attending should understand basic HVAC principles and have computer-operating experience. 7 WINTER IS COMING IS YOUR TRUCK READY? Wintry weather is coming and so are those late night emergency repair calls from your customers. Emergency calls often come on the coldest winter nights, which means you ll likely be traveling on inclement roads at times. You ll want to make sure your truck is prepared for those calls on cold winter nights. Below are a few pointers suggested by the National Safety Council on how you can ensure that your vehicle is up and running when those calls come in. Make sure you ve had an oil change and a tune-up. Change your wiper blades if needed. Check your vehicle s battery. Make sure your belts and hoses don t have heavy cracks or chunking. Ensure that your snow tires are in good shape, and keep your tire pressure at an optimal level. Check your radiator s anti-freeze mix the best ratio of antifreeze to water 50/50. Have an emergency kit ready that includes blankets, boots, winter wear, shovel, flares, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, kitty litter (for traction if stuck in the snow), bottled water, and a first-aid kit. Drive for the weather if the roads are snowy and icy, allow yourself additional time and slow down! Ensure that your truck is winter-ready is by taking it to a professional mechanic. A licensed automotive technician is most able to identify problems with your vehicle and make the necessary repairs. NOW, THERE S AN APP FOR THAT TOTALINE MOBILE TECHNICIAN TMT Imagine you re at a jobsite, and you realize the only way to find the replacement part you need to repair the HVAC equipment is to tear the entire system down. After you get done doing that, you then will have to go to your nearest Totaline Sales Center to get the part you need. It s now 8 p.m. and you know you won t be able to get to the store until the morning. And, it s the coldest night of the year. Don t you wish finding the right part for the job was as easy as checking your Smartphone? Because of the ease of locating the needed part, Jenkins believes that this application will greatly help improve productivity for the technician, which will lead to greater customer satisfaction. Sometimes, the only way a technician can find which part they need is to tear down the system to locate the serial number, which may take a partially operating system offline, Jenkins said. With this application, that won t have to happen. We want to help technicians fix the unit right the first time. He went on to say that because of the advanced scanning ability, it s much easier to prevent mistakes in data entry the app allows for simple scanning of the barcode, saving technicians time and helping to ensure that the correct product is located. Jenkins explained that there will be both tablet and Smartphone versions of the app available in the very near future.
