1 An Introduction to BBC Future Media & Market Engagement
2 What are BBC Online and Future Media? BBC Online refers to all BBC created content delivered over IP from BBC News websites, to blogs, to mobile sites, to Childrens' Games, to Connected Red Button services accessed via IPTV. It also refers to Traditional Red Button, which is complementary programming delivered by broadcast. It is a virtual division spanning the BBC, with all parts of the BBC responsible for making their content av silable on BBC Online from the News journalists populating BBC News Online, to the TV and Radio programmes that are watched via TV and Radio iplayer. BBC Future Media, which manages a large part of BBC Online, sits within the Strategy & Digital division and is responsible for all of the BBC s digital media services. It caters for audiences who want to access and interact with BBC programmes and services through the internet. By bringing technology and design teams together to work in partnership with the BBC s editorial teams, it creates products like BBC iwonder guides and mobile apps for Sport and Weather.
3 Organisation Future Media is made up of 12 business areas: Homepage & mybbc User Experience & Design (UX&D) Distribution & Business Development Business Operations Radio & Music Product Group TV Product Group News Product Group Sport & Children s Product Group Interactive Technical Advice & Contracts Unit (ITACU) Platform Foundation (OTG) Research & Development (R&D) In addition to these departments, Future Media (FM) is also supported by: Marketing & Audiences Finance Legal & Business Affairs Communications Strategy HR Leadership The Future Media Group Board is responsible for making key strategic decisions that shape and lead the success of Future Media. The board is comprises up to 16 general managers, controllers, chief officers and directors from across Future Media. It meets monthly and is chaired by Ralph Rivera, the Director of BBC Future Media. Ralph joined the BBC from Major League Gaming in New York, where he was responsible for product development for the largest professional video game league in the world.
4 BBC Strategy: Where Next? In October 2013 BBC Director-General Tony Hall outlined a new vision for the BBC over the next 10 years, including the five priorities for BBC Future Media, listed below. Innovation at scale To champion technical creativity within products and outside business as usual, in collaboration with the online media industry and run Connected Studio on behalf of the entire BBC. The BBC, Online To develop and run an integrated service for the whole BBC, greater than the sum of its parts and built on a broadcast-quality platform fit for the BBC s global ambitions. Continuous Delivery To deploy software early and often, automating processes and using the cloud's flexibility to build great products.
5 Market Engagement: Who are we? The Market Engagement team sits within the Business Development department of BBC Future Media. The team comprises: Richard Smith Head of Market Engagement Michelle Rogers Business Manager, External Supply Jake Bailey Market Engagement Executive Maureen Gore Interim Procurement Manager Providing the necessary links between BBC teams and the independent digital media industry, Market Engagement supports the development of great working relationships and ensures fair and transparent commissioning processes. The team has a wide network of relationships and business contacts across industries, putting it in a good position to match commissioner needs with supplier capabilities.
6 Market Engagement: Remit Digital Frameworks BBC Future Media operates three digital framework agreements, managed by Market Engagement. Suppliers accepted onto these frameworks (or rosters ) are of varying sizes and with wide-ranging skills and experience in digital testing, digital design and digital services. These frameworks are opened up to new suppliers periodically, with opportunities to join posted on the BBC Procurement Portal, BravoSolution. Find out more about the current rosters at On-boarding new suppliers Market Engagement provides an initial contact point for suppliers working with BBC for the first time, walking them through registration and induction processes, setting up details for payment and other tasks to ensure the development of efficient working relationships. Industry Engagement Events Market Engagement organises two BBC Online Industry Briefings per year. These events are attended by approximately 250 partners, suppliers and BBC staff and feature a range of presentations and discussions on a variety of relevant themes, delivered by teams from across the BBC and invited guest speakers. These briefing events give suppliers the opportunity to meet with commissioners; learn about the strategic direction of various departments and products across the BBC; and to network with one another. Market Engagement also organises or attends a number of regional events each year, meeting with existing and prospective digital suppliers to discuss opportunities and potential improvements to the commissioning process.
7 Quota minimum External Spend Quota % External Supply Quota The BBC has a formal commitment to work with the industry, operating on an external spend quota set by the BBC Trust, where at least 25% of eligible activity is to be spent with independent suppliers. Market Engagement works with key members of the product and finance teams to report on progress and ensure this quota is met. Support for Commissioners In order to source the most creative, innovative solutions at the best possible value for money, the BBC is committed to fair and transparent procurement processes, agreed with the BBC Trust. Market Engagement advises commissioners on best practise when engaging external suppliers, helping to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budgets and with clear reporting and audit trails. It also helps the BBC to meet its obligations under the EU public procurement rules. Strategy and Direction Market Engagement operates a regular calendar of meetings designed to gain feedback from external advisors; to facilitate internal discussions and to use findings to inform BBC Online strategy and direction. Online Advisory Group The OAG has an independent membership in the main with an independent Chair. This group discusses key themes relating to the business, provides direct market input to strategy and advises the senior BBC Future Media team throughout the year. External Supply Steering Group The ESSG meets monthly and focuses on the BBC's relationship with the external market both from a business and an engagement perspective. The membership of this group is internal and it is chaired by the Head of Market Engagement. Online Leadership Group The OLG is the board that sets the overall strategy and governance of BBC Online. This group meets monthly and is chaired by Ralph Rivera, the Director of Future Media.
