2 How to use this Selection Guide 1. Select the machine you will be using via the main colour tab. 2. Select the material you will be cutting/grinding/polishing via the colour tab or page within that section. 3. Select the wheel type/operation from the correct column. 4. Select the appropriate specification for your machine and intended application. 5. Select the appropriate wheel dimension (wheel size and bore size) and speed rating for your machine. 6. Please note any special operating conditions which apply to that particular wheel. These are marked within this guide. 7. 3 Safety considerations - care, maintenance & use of Flexovit wheels 1. Always read the safety instructions and standards before using the machine and wheel. Use the correct wheel for the machine and application. 2. Always handle and store wheels correctly. Never store in areas subject to damp or extreme temperatures, or in a manner that would damage the wheel. 3. Always visually inspect all wheels prior to mounting for possible damage. Never mount a damaged wheel. 4. Always use a safety guard and ensure that it is correctly positioned and secured. 5. Always remove power from the machine before changing the wheel. 6. Always use the tool supplied by the machine manufacturer to change the wheel. 7. Always ensure that the spindle speed of the machine is no higher than the operating speed marked on the wheel. 8. Allow newly mounted wheels to run at operating speed with the guard in place for a reasonable time before cutting or grinding. 9. Have the machine speed checked regularly, especially after maintenance or repair. 10. Check any drive belt tension regularly. Drive belts must be kept tight to ensure full power transmission. 11. Always ensure the workpiece is firmly secured during cutting or grinding. 12. Always cut in a straight line. 13. Always use portable machines in a comfortable position. Ensure your body is well balanced and the machine is correctly supported. 14. Never grind at an angle less than 30 degrees to the workpiece with a depressed centre grinding wheel (Type 27). 15. Always wear appropriate safety clothing, gloves, hearing, respiratory and eye protection. 16. Keep the work area around cutting and grinding operations clear. Ensure it is free from flammable materials and that all cables and/or airlines are not obstructed. 17. Never use non-reinforced cut-off wheels on portable machines. 18. Never force a wheel onto a machine spindle. Ensure the bore size of the wheel matches the spindle size of the machine. 19. Never use incorrect, damaged, dirty or burred mounting flanges. 20. Always use blotters when mounting wheels of 300mm diameter or greater. 21. Never tighten the mounting nut or flange excessively. 22. Ensure the machine is in optimum condition with the correct safety guard in place. 23. Never apply side pressure to the periphery or face of the wheel to slow it down. 24. Never apply excessive force to the wheel or machine so that the motor speed slows under resistance. 25. Never grind on the side of cut-off wheels or depressed centre cut-off wheels. 26. Never drop a portable machine or lower it by the cable or airline. If a machine is accidentally dropped, ensure it is checked by an authorised technician before being returned to use. Page 2
