TECHNICAL REVISION December 2015 Piping PIP PNCM0001 Piping Line Class Designator System

PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice. This Practice is subject to revision at any time. Process Industry Practices (PIP), Construction Industry Institute, The University of Texas at Austin, 3925 West Braker Lane (R4500), Austin, Texas PIP Member Companies and Subscribers may copy this Practice for their internal use. Changes or modifications of any kind are not permitted within any PIP Practice without the express written authorization of PIP. Authorized Users may attach addenda or overlays to clearly indicate modifications or exceptions to specific sections of PIP Practices. Authorized Users may provide their clients, suppliers and contractors with copies of the Practice solely for Authorized Users purposes. These purposes include but are not limited to the procurement process (e.g., as attachments to requests for quotation/ purchase orders or requests for proposals/contracts) and preparation and issue of design engineering deliverables for use on a specific project by Authorized User s client. PIP s copyright notices must be clearly indicated and unequivocally incorporated in documents where an Authorized User desires to provide any third party with copies of the Practice. 4 TECHNICAL REVISION Piping Line Class Designator System December Introduction 1.1 Purpose This Practice provides the designator system for identifying PIP piping line classes. 1.2 Scope This Practice describes the arrangement of the PIP piping line class designations and the requirements for each field within a designation. Designation requirements are provided for both PIP-developed and owner-developed piping line classes. A one-page summary of the PIP Piping Line Class Designator System specified in this Practice is provided in Appendix D. 2. Requirements 2.1 General The Piping Line Class Designator System shall consist of six alternating alphanumeric fields containing one or two characters each (maximum of ten characters). The first five fields are mandatory while the sixth is optional Each field shall describe various features of a piping line class. 2.2 Field Definitions First Field Pressure Rating The first field shall define the pressure rating The pressure rating field shall consist of one or two numeric characters in accordance with Table Second Field Piping Material The second field shall define the nominal pipe material The nominal pipe material field shall consist of two alphabetic characters in accordance with Table Third Field Corrosion Allowance The third field shall define the corrosion/erosion allowance The corrosion/erosion allowance field shall consist of one numeric character in accordance with Table Fourth Field Joint Construction The fourth field shall define the joint construction/construction type The joint construction/construction type field shall consist of one alphabetic character in accordance with Table 4. Process Industry Practices Page 2 of 11

TECHNICAL REVISION Piping Line Class Designator System December Fifth Field Sequential Number The fifth field shall define a sequential number for numbering variations of a line class The sequential number field shall consist of two numeric characters that shall be applied in accordance with the following ranges: a. Numbers 01 through 79 Reserved for PIP piping line classes b. Numbers 80 through 99 Reserved for owner developed piping line classes Sixth Field Owner s Designation (As Required) To change the designation number if revisions, alterations, and/or additions to a PIP piping line class are required, the owner shall add an alphabetic character after the fifth field designator The number of alphabetic characters shall be limited to two for a maximum of ten characters total to designate a line class The alphabetic character(s) shall be added directly to the PIP piping line class number as a suffix and without a delimiter. 2.3 Example Designation An example of a complete PIP piping line class designator is 3CS1S01. Where: First Field (Pressure Rating): 3 = ASME Pressure Class 300 Second Field (Piping Material): CS = Carbon Steel Base Material Piping System Third Field (Corrosion Allowance): 1 = Multiples of 1/16" Fourth Field (Joint Construction): S = Socketweld Small Bore Construction and Buttweld and Flanged Large Bore Construction Fifth Field (Sequential Number): 01 = First Piping Line Class in this piping material/ pressure class series 2.4 Standard Notes PIP Standard Notes Standard notes with associated note numbers have been developed for the PIP piping line classes. The notes provide additional information (i.e., guidance, caution, clarification, etc.) Applicable PIP Standard Notes shall be shown on each PIP piping line class PIP Standard Notes shall be designated using numbers 01 through 699 as required. Process Industry Practices Page 3 of 11

TECHNICAL REVISION Piping Line Class Designator System December Owner Standard Notes If company- or project-specific notes are required for a PIP piping line class, the notes shall be added using an addendum form (see Section 2.5.3) Owner standard notes shall be designated using numbers 700 through 999 as required, or a designation that does not conflict with the PIP Standard Notes numbering system. 2.5 Cover Sheet / Addendum Form A Cover Sheet / Addendum Form is provided in Appendix A for use as a cover sheet for incorporating the PIP piping line classes into an owner s corporate standards system, or for use as an addendum for specifying company- or projectspecific revisions, alterations, and/or additions to PIP piping line classes Cover Sheet An owner s corporate standards system may require that a cover sheet be attached to a PIP piping line class to communicate the extent to which the specification applies within the owner s company and/or for the owner s specific project If the dual-purpose Cover Sheet / Addendum Form is used as a cover sheet, and if revisions, alterations, or additions to the line class specification are not required, the owner should complete the fields on the form as follows: a. PIP Practice number, PIP piping line class number, and Scope should be filled in. b. The Addendum Number should not be filled in. c. The words No Change should be filled in for Sections 2 through An example of a completed form used as a cover sheet is shown in Appendix B Addendum for Revisions, Alterations, and Additions An owner s company, operating location, or project may require revisions, alterations, and/or additions to a PIP piping line class(es). To accommodate such cases, the dual-purpose Cover Sheet / Addendum Form should be used as an addendum to specify the changes If the Cover Sheet / Addendum Form is used as an addendum to specify revisions, alterations, and/or additions to a PIP piping line class, the owner should complete the following fields on the form as follows: a. PIP Practice number, PIP piping line class number, and Addendum Number alphabetic character(s) should be filled in. b. Within the sections (i.e., Scope, Design, Materials, etc.) where changes are specified, necessary information to detail the deviation(s) to the PIP piping line class should be filled in. Process Industry Practices Page 4 of 11

TECHNICAL REVISION Piping Line Class Designator System December 2015 c. The words No Change should be filled in for the unchanged sections An owner may create more than one addendum for a PIP piping line class An example of a completed form used as an addendum is shown in Appendix C.
