Aluminium Packaging Recycling: the contribution from Romania towards a more resource efficient Europe European Recycling Society Annual Conference (2 nd edition) Bucharest, 9-10 April 2014 Maarten G. Labberton Director Packaging Group European Aluminium Association
Aluminium Packaging Rigid: beverage cans, aerosol cans, food and petfood containers Semi-rigid: menu trays, closures, capsules, screw caps Flexible: lids, wraps, laminated foil in beverage cartons, pouches, household foil, etc. Packaging 16% EAA Packaging Group: Producers of aluminium can- and foilstock for the manufacturing of a wide range of packaging end-use applications European network promoting the collection, sorting and recycling of aluminium packaging Vision and mission: Aluminium packaging actively contributes to resource efficiency and prevention Recycling is key to successful lobbying and communication on packaging
Active European network in more than 20 countries promoting collection and recycling of aluminium beverage cans (+ other aluminium packaging) Endurvinnslan ALUPRO Ireland Fileira Metal ARPAL Returpack/FTI PALPA/Mepak ALUPRO Nordic RESIRK Eesti PP Aluminium ALUPRO Baltics & ALUPRO Danmark Eastern Europe RAVN DAVR RECAL Stalupack FAR IGORA Pro-Alu-Pack Returpack RECAN Fund CiAL CANAL ALUCRO Established initiatives / contacts Activities in preparation Future need for activities European Network = Partnerships with customers, collection systems, authorities, consumers and NGO s
Aluminium packaging Intrinsic properties Formability Deadfold Mechanical Resistance Thermal and electric conductivity Excellent Barrier Reduced thickness levels (up to 6 microns) Infinitely Recyclable Corrosion resistant
Aluminium beverage can usage and recycling rates in Europe (EU 27+ EFTA, , 2020 projected) : 68% aluminium beverage can usage / capita / year recycling rate & / year Feasible to reach 75% in 2015 and 80% in 2020 overall rate, incl. unregistered collection & recycling minimum metals target EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Directive projected recycling rate
Our Aluminium Packaging Recycling Strategies a) 75% European-wide average recycling target for aluminium beverage cans by 2015, extra focus on out of home b) 80% of all rigid metal consumer packaging by 2020, no metals anymore to landfill c) Other rigid-and semi-rigid aluminium items via existing collection systems (e.g. foil containers, aerosol cans) d) Improve the recycling of small / thin aluminium packaging items (capsules, closures, etc.) e) Further potential for aluminium collection and recovery from bottom ashes of incinerators
used aluminium packaging fits in all recovery routes Mono-material / monopackaging collection (e.g. can-to-can recycling) Within the metal / mixed container packaging fraction, additional collection + sorting needed Incineration with energy recovery + aluminium extraction bottom ashes REMELTING Closed Aluminium Product loop Closed Aluminium Material loop THE ALUMINIUM POOL: from an environmental / CO-2 point of view it doesn t matter whether used cans end up again in new cans or in a bicycle, a building facade or an engine block
However each recovery system should meet some basic performance criteria Not very attractive design, poorly maintained and bad (mixed) material quality Improved lay-out but additional sorting still necessary, which can be a challenge
Collection & sorting routes for used aluminium. packaging. (separate and / or in combination with mixed systems) Rigid and semi-rigid items (bevcans, food/petfood cans, trays, aerosols, tubes, caps, closures, etc. Flexible items (wraps, plain foil, lidding, household foil, etc.) Incentive based schemes (voluntary, deposits, etc.) Separate collection (blue bag, metals bin, events, etc.) other (municipal) collection systems (mixed with other -packaging- waste) (Collection &) Sorting Centres Incineration with energy recovery and bottom ash treatment can-to-can remelting remelting into rolled or cast products for packaging, building or transport markets
Specific collection and recycling activities needed; we want all used aluminium packaging back! Cans but also foil containers, screw caps and closures, household foil and other thin foil applications Better and consistent collection and sorting instructions to the consumers Additional sorting capacity in order to further improve the quality of the collected material fractions (less impurities = more value!)
Even aluminium recycling from bottom ashes has a very interesting potential! Aluminium packaging oxidizes only partly during incineration Metallic aluminium appears in bottom ashes as nodules of molten aluminium, sometimes recognizable Increasing number of incinerators have bottom ash treatment facilities Various studies on the future potential and the behaviour of aluminium during incineration NB: Selective collection and separation for recycling is our preferred option Incineration with energy recovery and bottom ash treatment is complementary No recyclables to landfill anymore!
Every Can Counts A European Beverage Can Initiative to promote the collection and recycling of out-of-home cans
Aims, Purpose and Principles Every Can Counts enables and encourages more people to recycle their drink cans they outside the home: in workplaces (offices, canteens, etc.), colleges and universities and at locations and on occasions when people are on the go (sport events, pop concerts, etc.). The key purpose of Every Can Counts is to communicate the uniquely sustainable qualities of the beverage can, based on a set of key messages Every Can Counts supports established national recycling systems collected cans must count towards that country s recycling performance for beverage cans and metal packaging in general.
First developed in the UK in 2009 it caught very soon the attention of metal suppliers, canmakers, fillers and recyclers in other European countries
