3 Key principles for machining of titanium alloys: Reduce the high coefficient of friction of titanium = as possible to reduce the temperature at the tip of the edge. Use a sharp cutting edge and a large positive rake angle. Use substrate of inserts of following characteristics: a high resistance to abrasive wear a high resistance to plastic deformation high resistance to diffusion wear a high strength substrate (in some cases uncoated cast metal substrate worked very well) Utilize lower cutting speeds and give priority to climb milling. It is important to ensure an adequate supply of coolant to the tool. Machines are therefore equipped with a powerful coolant pump. Compared to the standard version of machine is a demand for more powerful coolant filtration because of chips which are light and swirl.
