3 E F F I C I E N C Y Utilize waste. To satisfy present and future energy needs requires the most efficient use of natural resources and the imaginative use of non-traditional resources. Gas turbines, made of nickel-containing super alloys for its ability to withstand high temperatures, generate electricity by utilizing waste gas from decomposing organic matter. And at the end of the life of the turbine, the nickel alloys will not be waste: they ckel will become new nickel-containing alloys for future generations.

4 u r a b i l i t y D ckel Built for generations. In operation and daily use in the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico since the 1930s, this pier has needed no paint, repairs or rehabilitation. It was built using nickel-containing stainless steel rebar. And when one day it is judged to be obsolete, the rebar will be reclaimed because it will be valuable and recycled into new nickel-containing stainless steel for use by future generations.

The toughness, strength, enhanced corrosion resistance and innate aesthetic appeal of nickel stainless steel enables function and form to be realized: an original roof in every sense that will last the lifetime of the building. And while today s stainless steel contains on average 60% recycled content, it s unlikely this icon will ever be recycled: museums one day will fight to have a piece of this enduring icon.

9 ckel Strong bridges last. The longest cantilever bridge in the world stays up because of 3% nickel steel, an innovation in 1917 when it was built. Since then, without painting or need for restoration, the nickel steel has been serving rail and vehicle traffic across the St. Lawrence River. For more than 80 years, Canadian winters and use of salt to melt ice and snow have not compromised its lasting strength. L o n g e v i t y

10 R e b o r n ckel The present has a future. Hybrid vehicles are now mainstream and use nickel metal hydride batteries. The next generation of hybrids and plugins will use other battery chemistries that will probably require nickel. Every battery pack in every hybrid vehicle is recyclable and is expected to be recycled: they are valuable not only for the resource they represent but in monetary terms too. And the nickel will go into products that will be important to our future.

11 ckel The present has a past. ckel-containing stainless steel has, on average, a recycle content of 60%. ckel stainless steels made from new material would be no more corrosion-resistant, formable, strong and durable as the nickel you see and use everyday. And eventually, a long time from now, this nickel stainless steel will be recycled for the benefit of society and the cycle will repeat itself. R e b o r n
