4 2. Personal considerations In addition to the job description, the following information should be used when considering whether a placement is suitable for you. Personal health considerations If you have a significant current or past medical condition and/or you have general concerns about staying healthy as a volunteer, please use this information to assess whether this placement will be suitable for you. All volunteers require medical clearance from a VSO medical adviser before they are able to take up a placement with VSO. Occasionally, VSO may consider that this placement is too great a risk for you in terms of your personal health and you would be advised to consider a different placement. For further guidance about medical assessment and volunteering with a medical condition please see the frequently asked questions on VSO website. Access to medical care and support The standard and quality of local medical care and support available at this placement will depend on its location within the country. Health facilities are likely to be more poorly resourced in rural areas in terms of medical expertise, equipment, infrastructure and regular supplies of medication. However, this may not be the case in the capital city or in a larger town, where in some countries there may be a reasonable standard of medical care. The following gives you an indication of where the placement is in relation to the country office and how easy it would be to make the journey if you were ill. This placement is based in the provincial town of Siem Reap province, with frequent travel to the field at districts and villages level in Kampong Thom province. Siem Reap province is in the northwest of Phnom Penh and is the famous tourism area (Angkor Wat temple) in Cambodia. The road from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is fairly easy to travel by bus, minibus or taxi, usually it takes five to six hours maximum to travel by minibus or taxi. It is possible to have basic tests and treatment done locally in Siem Reap Referral Hospital and there are well-stocked pharmacies in the town. For any serious concerns, there are a growing number of private medical practices and clinics in Phnom Penh with expatriate doctors, which VSO uses. In the event of any serious illness that cannot be treated in Phnom Penh, volunteers are flown to Bangkok for tests and treatment, or alternatively may need to return to their home countries If you wish to discuss your personal circumstances or health concerns in confidence with VSO s medical team before you apply for this placement please contact medical@vsoint.org. Accompanying partner or family: If you have a partner or children who are planning to accompany you to your placement, please use this section to assess whether this placement will be suitable for you. This placement is based at the provincial town and it is suitable for volunteers with accompanying partners or children and there is no any restriction such as marital status requirements. Motorcycle requirements Page 4
5 You will be required to ride a motorbike during your placement. A motorbike license will be essential and training will be provided if required. Motorbike training would be provided in your recruitment base prior to departure. Additional training will be provided during in country training orientation sessions. The motorbike provided is usually a Honda Dream a small, lightweight stepthrough (don t have to swing your leg over it to mount it). 110 or 125 cc 4-stroke engine, 4 speed, automatic clutch, top speed 125 kph, fording ability about half a metre. Road conditions in Battambang are good. Travel to target villages of the partner can be dangerous in some areas during the wet season when roads are slippery. Some travel in boats may be required. 3. Background and contextual information Recently, VSO Cambodia Livelihood programme has submitted the proposal to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) for the EU funded programme to MAFF called "Promoting sustainable and inclusive growth in the agriculture sector: livestock and fisheries". As part of the programme implementation, MAFF has a grant scheme for civil society organization to involve in implementing this programme. The programme divided into three components: Fisheries, Livestock and Sector Policy. Each component has the grant scheme and called for proposal separately but the start date of the project implementation is much similar because the end date of the project needs to be by June The livelihood Programme submitted proposals to two components (Fisheries and Livestock). VSO formed the consortium with other organization to bid for this grant. We were being a lead applicant in one proposal for the fishery project on Tonle Sap region and co-applicant in three proposals with WWF (fisheries), AVSF and Heifer (Livestock) Particularly, this placement is falling to the fishery project on Tonle Sap region. VSO is a lead applicant with other three co-applicants which CCD is one among others. The project has three component to address fishery issues on Tonle Sap region especially in Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom province, 1) strengthening co-management of fishery resources 2) aquaculture and alternative livelihoods development 3) value chain development. VSO has been awarded the grant and the project has started to implement the activities from July Details of proposal could be sent upon request. Further information on VSO s work in each of the countries we work can be found on the VSO website. Page 5
