Sustainability Definition development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (Brundtland 1987)
Sustainability in Amcor Our goal is to ensure we build sustainability into everyday business thinking Ken MacKenzie Amcor CEO & Managing Director Our long-term economic performance is in part dependent on a balanced and focused approach to social and environmental responsibility.
Amcor's enviroaction targets Greenhouse gas emission reduction: 10% reduction in GHG emissions per unit of production by 2011 from 2005/06 60% reduction in GHG emissions per unit of production by 2030 from 2005/06 Waste to landfill reduction 30% reduction in waste to landfill per unit of production by 2011 from 2005/06 Zero waste to landfill the long term objective Water targets Water stressed regions with defined reduction targets Water use (Australia) 45% reduction by 2011 from 2005/06 Other regions implementing water management plans
Sustainable Product Strategies Sustainable Product design through The Three R's: Reduction: - Reduction in packaging weight, Carbon Footprint and food waste Recycling: - Using recycled material (e.g. rpet), recycle extrusion waste and use "Monomaterials" for entry into post-consumer recycle programmes (e.g. PET, PP, PE) Renewables: - Films from renewable resources such as PLA, and Natureflex regenerated cellulose. Many of these films can also be designed to be compostable

REDUCTION
Reduction Reduction in packaging weight Reduction in carbon footprint & LCA Reduction in food waste
Weight Reduction 4 Simple Steps 1. Downgauge (5-15 %) 2. Laminate to coex (10-20%) 3. Component reduction (20-30%) (label & film to pre-printed) 4. Format change Rigid to flexibles (50-90%) Fin Seal to Lap Seal (2-5%) Run with no edge trim (2-5%) Headspace reduction (5-20%)
Reduction - Rigid to Flexibles Amcor HeatFlex Stand-up-pouch v cans & jars - overall environmental Impact Transparent: 4-ply ALU-based: Glass: Steel: Production: Identical amounts of finished product Source: Danish Environmental Protection Agency Publication No
Weight Reduction Amcor PushPop 80 % Weight Reduction 70 % Carbon Footprint reduction Easy Opening - Swedish Arthritic Society Award AquaFlexCan from PET bottles 80 % Weight Reduction
Weight Reduction - Blister packs COC PVC Free - no toxic substances released on incineration 40% weight saving when compared to equivalent barrier performance PVC/PVdC films 40% CO2 emission reduction
Carbon Footprint Reduction Amcor has developed an Industry leading Carbon Footprint tool (to PAS 2050 standard) to measure the Carbon Footprint of Amcor Flexibles products. Amcor also has the capability to carry out LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) for entire products
Example from Carbon Footprint Calculator 120% Carbon Footprint Comparison Gravure Print 3 ply Laminate 100% 80% 60% kg CO2e/m² Kg CO2e / kg 40% 20% 0% 12PET// 12Foil//75PE 12PET// 9Foil//75PE 12PET// 9Foil//40cPP 18OPP// 12mPET //50PE 12PET// 12AlOxPET//50PE

How can we do our bit to tackle Climate Change? Carbon Dioxide given off when we burn fossil fuels in our cars, homes and factories is a source of Climate Change. 3.5 Tonnes Carbon Dioxide every year An average car driven 10,000 miles per year generates 3.5 Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide. 500kg + = 500kg 3.5 Tonnes Carbon Dioxide for 1 tonne printed film 1 Tonne of printed OPP or PE film generates the same amount of Carbon Dioxide as one car per year Think before you bin it!
