2 Air Pollution Air Pollution consists of gases, liquids, or solids present in the atmosphere in high enough levels to harm humans, other organisms, or materials. Living at the interface of Earth's surface and atmosphere, humans think of the atmosphere as an unlimited resource, but we should reconsider because some of these substances are harmful when they precipitate(form a solid) and settle on land and surface waters. One example of Air Pollution is Los Angeles which is the most polluted city on the American Heart Associations Annual Air Pollution. 2

3 1. Analysis / Diagnosis: Outcome(s) Air pollution harms health, damages forest and lakes and lowers our quality of life. Air pollution caused by human activities can be carried hundreds of miles away making air pollution a global dilemma. Los Angeles, California, has air pollution in a form of a smog. It is the worst case of air pollution in the world due to its geography and heavily reliance on vehicles. More than 16 million people drive 9.5 million cars and trucks in Los Angeles and its suburbs. Overall, human contribution of air pollution is the fact that much of the air pollution released by humans is concentrated in densely populated urban areas. 3

4 2. Analysis / Diagnosis: Actions / Causes The two main human sources of primary air pollutants are: Vehicle Exhaust Tremendous Growth in Industries In L.A., air pollution is worsened due to its heavy vehicle traffic and weather conditions. 4

5 3. Analysis / Diagnosis: Beliefs All these activities lead to the neglect of the environment: Industrial growth Economic Development Heavy reliance on Transportation *Due to industrial growth and economical development they neglected to see that they depended more heavily on transportation. 5

6 4. Summary Issue Summary The beliefs / values of most humans is that the atmosphere is an unlimited resource. Smog conditions are worsened by heavy vehicle traffic, heat, still winds. Unfortunate consequences are deadly diseases as asthma, emphysema, lung and heart disease, and other respiratory problems. Each year, millions of people die from these diseases, which are directly related to poor air quality 6

Prescription / Proposal: Desired Beliefs If Air Pollution persist, our health, family, and the environment will suffer tremendously as well as future inhabitants of the world from health problems. 8 6. Prescription: Desired Actions / Behaviors One way to control air pollution is to find new sources of fuel that burn cleaner. Try to use public transportation and carpool! Reduce, reuse, recycle of products reduces all types of air pollution! Upgrade and maintain your vehicle. Another is to motivation through financial incentives and/or new regulations. 10 8. Summary Conclusions In conclusion, Air pollution is a global dilemma. Each year, millions of people die from these diseases, asthma, emphysema, lung and heart disease, and other respiratory problems, which are directly related to poor air quality. We can do little things every day to help reduce air pollutants, and help better our air quality. Overall, we can provide a better environment for future inhabitants of the world. 10
