A downstream service to support agro-production, planning and policy FP7-SPACE CALL Contract N : ERMES 1st Annual Meeting 26-27/03/ Valencia
End-Users Session Expectations of the ERMES project Dimitris Kastantonis ERMES 1 st Anual Meeting 26/03/ Valencia
The definition of End-User In economics and commerce, an End-User is a person that uses a particular product. In ERMES case: An end-user of a service or software is someone who uses it. 3
Initial directions 21/04/2015 4
Regional Rice Service The developed service should provide to actors and stakeholders agro-monitoring information devoted to: Regional cultivated area Crop monitoring Meteorological forecasts Regional yield forecasting Risk alerting Regional yield and quality estimation 5
Regional Rice Service output The service should be accessible: Though a web application Digital maps and data tables By issuing bulletins twice per year All the provided information should point to the regional policy making 6
Local Rice Service To provide to the private sector at local level: Cultivated area Yield forecast Yield maps-patterns N fertilization assistance Biotic or abiotic risk alerts (critically: rice blast) Quality estimates The service should be available though a geo-portal and applications using smartphones. 7
Some critical directions Will ERMES project assist local stakeholders on critical aspects of the rice farming? HOW? User friendly interface. Weed infestation Rice blast e.g. zero point detection Poor emergence Nitrogen surface fertilization assistance to field variability (application time and dose) Improve meteorological forecasting though interpolation Yield forecasting according to each case 8
Some critical directions (continued) Early yield estimation even for comparison between cultivars (eg indica & japonica due to different prices) (not identification) Improve contract farming though accurate forecasting Automatic field-positioning detection through smart apps, tunneling all the provided information All the provided information should point to the reduction of costs and the improvement of the production 9
A final though We consider ERMES service that it should assist European rice stakeholders on the policy making of rice cultivation. And to be used as a alert factor for the improvement of the commercial imported product. 10
Demeter Demeter is the national body responsible for the agricultural research and technology in Greece. It was established October 2011, while the former organization (NAGREF) was established in Plant Breeding and Genetics Resources Institute is a new entity (1/2015) formed by merging of 7 crop science institutes. Demeter has to roles in the project RTD partner End-user 11
Rice Unit Main Research Activities Breeding for japonica and indica types. Registration and release of new varieties Study of the biotic and abiotic stresses, such as rice blast, salinity, pink stem borer etc. Precision agriculture Agrochemical trials with private companies
Other activities Agronomists, Farmers and Students training and awareness Maintenance and seed production of 8 commercial rice varieties. Commercial varieties evaluation Maintenance of rice gene-bank (>350 accessions) Research on novel rice derived products such as rice bran, bran oil ect.
Plastiras Family (2014 activities) They cultivated 250 ha of rice in Kalochori area They manage in total 700 ha in the same area They influence most of the farmers in the Kalochori area as they provide professional management services The produced more than 2000 ton of rice They participated in the national Integrated Pest Management program They own a series of the most modern agriculture machines such as Clas and John Deere with additional satellite support (undergoing functionality). 14
