1 The Great Textile Collection Eco-Team activity: This Eco-Team activity gives you the structure to support your pupils to plan and deliver a textile collection event for your school and to raise money for a charity or project of your choice. It is also a great Waste project for your Eco-Schools work, focusing on re-use. Group Timing Space Resources Health and Safety Curriculum links Learning Objectives Organisation Introduction Eco-Team Two preparation sessions plus Clothing Drive collection event and review / celebration session Hall and classroom T-shirt lifecycle video and BTR video optional use of computers and photo/video equipment. Standard school procedures English: Plan writing to suit audience and purpose ICT: collect and present data appropriately To organise a Clothing Drive To promote an event Teacher Activity Show the t-shirt lifecycle and Bristol Textile Recyclers (BTR) video to the Eco-Team and discuss the need for clothes to be redirected from landfill to re-use facilities such as charity shops and BTR. Explain that they are going to be responsible for organising a Clothing Drive. This could be done on a normal school day or as part of a non-school uniform day to give it more emphasis and excitement. The Clothing Drive will help to raise money for the school. Discuss what you will spend the money on. Children should then investigate the BTR website and gather further information including which textiles can be collected and how much will be earned for each kilo. 1
2 Main Activity Discuss with the children what they will need to do to publicise and run the Clothing Drive. Suggested activities are listed below; those in bold are central to organising a successful collection and will maximize the funds collected by the school. During your meeting, use the Action Planning grid (see pages 4/5) to record who will do what. If you are working for an Eco-Schools Award, this can be appended to your Eco-Schools Action Plan to show this great project is addressing the Waste topic. Identify a date to hold the Clothing Drive and add this information to the poster template. Contact BTR to arrange the collection. Create the brand: Discuss the term Clothing Drive and decide if it is a good title. Do pupils have a better name? Decide how you will publicise the Clothing Drive to pupils and families: Options include an assembly, a poster competition, and an article in the parents newsletter. If it is possible, organize a trip to visit the BTR facilities for the poster competition winners or the children who bring in the most clothes. Other areas for discussion could be how to motivate people - would some competition between classes help? The Eco-Team might want to set targets. Plan an assembly: Discuss what information this needs to include, and how best to present it to engage the whole school in the Clothing Drive. Introduce the poster competition to the school, including collection date information, and announce the prize for best poster. Write a newsletter article: Explain to parents why it is important to reuse clothes, how the collection will work, and who will benefit from the funds raised. Run a poster competition to promote the clothing drive: Ask pupils to decide on the rules for the competition and to design a flyer to encourage each class to join the competition. Decide on who will judge the competition, and what your prize categories will be (e.g., age groups, most colourful, most informative etc.) Set a closing date for one month before the Clothing Drive allowing plenty of time for judging and for posters to be displayed around the school. 2
3 Main Activity Collection on the day: Organise a collection space such as the hall/classroom Allocate sections for different classes if you have decided to include competitive elements Reporting on the day: Write a report for school newsletter / website / social media If equipment is available, include photographs / video taken by pupils, including before and after shots to show the amount of textiles. Stop motion would work well in this situation. After the day: Award certificates / stickers for the most textiles collected Edit any photos/video taken during the event Produce a follow up assembly using photos/video of event including a celebration of the amount of money raised and where it is going. Review Review how the event went with the Eco-Team and identify any areas for improvement. Create a display of the event in the main foyer or on your Eco-Schools Noticeboard, including a suggestions box for future Clothing Drives. Don t forget to make a note of pupils and teachers responses. These can feed into planning your next Clothing Drive 3
4 Clothing Drive Action Plan Fill in this planning grid during your Action Planning meeting with the Eco Team. The What? column lists many of the actions your school will need to carry out for a successful event; feel free to edit this to suit your school and to include your pupils ideas. The Who column should include as many pupils names as possible, to give the Eco-Team a sense of ownership of the campaign. At your second Eco Team meeting, revisit your plan, and update it as necessary. Be sure to tick off the things that have already been done! Before the day What? Who? When? Done Notes Book date for the Clothing Drive Contact BTR to arrange collection Book a large collection space (e.g., the hall) Plan and promote poster competition Publicity plan & deliver assembly Publicity write newsletter / website article Publicity judge poster competition Publicity print and display winning poster(s) Publicity press release Publicity last minute reminder to each class Photos 4
