Pork Industry Environmental Sustainability Initiative September 2011
What Do We Mean By Sustainability? Resources are not depleted or permanently damaged compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The resources we do use are used as efficiently as possible with little or no waste. 2
Sustainability Effort Why? Doing What s Right Produce Safe Food Protect And Promote Animal Well-Being Ensure Practices to Protect Public Health Safeguard Natural Resources In All Of Their Practices Provide A Work Environment That Is Safe Contribute To A Better Quality Of Life In Their Communities 3
Sustainability Effort Why? Addressing a Changing Marketplace Customers / consumers increasingly removed from agriculture Customers / consumers increasingly concerned about food quality, environmental & health impacts Increasing exposure & pressure from special interest groups & media Need to build & maintain trust 4
Sustainability Effort Why? Benefits to Producers Improved management efficiency Reduced input costs Potential new revenue sources 5
Sustainability Effort Why? Expected Outcomes Analytical Tool for Pork Producer Use Tools to define facility footprint, analyze hotspots & options Take Credit For Industry Progress Made ID Areas For Further Industry Progress Provide Data To Answer / preempt attacks by special interests Support dialogue on issues with scientific data 6
Sustainability Effort How? 3 Phase Approach Literature Review Scan Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) - Pork Chain Across entire pork chain - field to fork Understand live swine production role/contribution relative to the whole Detailed Life-cycle Assessment - Live Swine Focus on swine production segment of pork chain- field to farm gate Understand details of live swine production role / contribution 7
Pork LCA- Goal & Scope Goal Pork Supply Chain Scan Level LCA Based on 1 serving (4 oz.) boneless pork to U.S. consumer Detailed Live Swine Production LCA Based on 1 pound live weight sent to harvest Scope Field to Finished Product Include fuels Exclude infrastructure (buildings/equipment/etc.) 8
