8 Starter Fertilizer Enhances Early Season Growth Starter fertilizer improves nutrient availability: Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are key components. Phosphorus promotes vigorous root growth. Cold, wet soils and small roots contribute to nutrient deficiencies, especially phosphorus (P). Starter fertilizer puts nutrients where small root systems can reach for uptake. Starter fertilizer is an efficient way to apply micronutrients found to be in short supply. It is most beneficial in cold, wet soils. Research shows a positive impact on germination and early season vigor, which contribute to plant stand and yield. Caberato, Jim, et al. Corn Response to Starter Fertilizer.
