This overall goal is being accomplished through the improvement of nutrient intake and utilization and reproductive efficiency directed to the animal production with low inputs but good productive levels with minimal adverse effects on the natural environment. Furthermore, attention has been also directed to the utilization of local genetic resources and forage-based production systems for meat production. 3 PPF_FP7_T2.4 Description of previous and present experience in International Cooperation (max. 10 lines) Our experience in International cooperation has been centred in the cooperation with multinational private companies testing several feed additives, namely probiotics and yeasts. Other projects we are now involved in include cooperation with Oil Companies in order to asses the nutritive value of Jatropha curcas. Another important field that has been established is related to the cooperation with Spanish Research Centres in order to study different aspects of sustainable animal production. I-1) Identification of mechanisms responsible for differences in efficiency of nutrient utilization; 2) Utilization of natural alternative products as feed additives to improve the nutrient utilization; 3) Development of methods for feed evaluation; 4) Valorisation of residues from biodiesel and bioethanol production using biological treatments. II-Studies are conducted for the characterization and use of local genetic resources of farm animals. III-Research is focused on valorisation of marginal lands for animal production related with landscape management including: 1) Evaluation of the nutritive value of feeds and study of grazing behaviour of free ranging animals using n-alkanes; 2) Influence of grazing management strategies on the control of gastrointestinal parasites.
