c/o University of Alberta International 142 Telus (87 Ave & 111 St) Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2R3 Canada Telephone : Posting 1 Internship Job Posting Form The University of Supervising Professor Dr Lokesh P. Padhye Supervisor s l.padhye@auckland.ac.nz weeks Start date From 04/2017 End date Till 09/2017 Hours (per week) 40 Reducing Green House Gas Emissions by Activated Carbon - Mechanism study of N2O Capture Civil and Environmental Engineering Student will work with a PhD student to delineate reaction mechanisms of nitrous oxide adsorption and nutrient leaching from activated carbon. Focus is to identify intermediates, generate adsorption isotherms, and characterize various treated carbons for field application to reduce GHG emissions from agricultural fields. Student is expected to work in the environmental engineering laboratory with bench scale set-up for experiments. He/she will also need to use analytical instruments to quantify analytes as well detection of daughter products to understand the reaction mechanisms. At the end of the internship, student is expected to present his/her research work to the environmental group. Student is expected to do a thorough literature review (1-2 weeks) before starting a laboratory work.
Senior undergraduate student with some environmental engineering experience, either through relevant courses or lab experience. Need to have good verbal and written communication skills (English). Recommended to have some experience in professional writing. The expectation is that the research work should be of high standards to produce at least one research output. Journal article is preferred if the internship period is more than 4 months. For 3 months of internships, the work should at least lead to one conference presentation. Posting 2 The University of Supervising Professor Dr Lokesh P. Padhye Supervisor s l.padhye@auckland.ac.nz weeks Start date From 04/2017 End date Till 09/2017 Hours (per week) 40 Advanced treatment processes for emerging contaminants in the aqueous environment Civil and Environmental Engineering The project will look at some of the advanced treatments for emerging contaminants in water/wastewater. These will include advanced oxidation processes, membrane treatment, and catalytic processes with nanomaterials. The emerging contaminants under study are PPCPs, POPs, pesticides, and veterinary antibiotics. Student is expected to work in the environmental engineering laboratory with bench scale set-up for experiments. He/she will also need to use analytical instruments to determine the fate of parent compounds as well detection of daughter products to understand the reaction mechanisms of treatments.
Posting 3 The University of Supervising Professor Supervisor s Improving Grey Water Treatment by membranes modified for reactivity and antimicrobial activity Civil and Environmental Engineering/Faculty of Engineering Associate Professor Naresh Singhal n.singhal@auckland.ac.nz 16 weeks Start date 1 May 2017 End date 18 August 2017 Hours (per week) 40 Membrane processes are effective in delivering high quality water. The process however suffers from fouling, and periodic measures to address this aspect lead to increasing the operation cost. In this project we will look into preparation of antifouling and antimicrobial polymer membranes based on bioinspired polydopamine coupled with in-situ synthesised nano magnetite. In this project we will test the effect of this modification on reactivity and antimicrobial efficacy for different water source compositions.
The appointee will undertake reserach on the specified topic under the guidance of an academic member and, where applicable, in association with a postgraduate student from the group. The appointee will demonstrate independent thinking and rational approach to experimental design and methodology development, participate in experimental setup assembly, develop appropriate analytical methods, conduct experiments, analyse experntal findings, and discuss these with the project supervisor. Assemble experimental setup, design and conduct experiments, analyse data, discuss results with project supervisor, and write and submit reports for feedback from project supervisor. Enrolled in a bachelors degree in environmental or chemical engineering, environmental science or chemistry, or related discipline. Be familiar with concepts in organic and physical chemistry, chemical analytical methods, statistical procedures, and good communication skills. Posting 4 The University of Supervising Professor Supervisor s Whole Cell Biocatalysis of Organic Micropollutants in Wastewater Civil and Environmental Engineering/Faculty of Engineering Associate Professor Naresh Singhal n.singhal@auckland.ac.nz 16 weeks Start date 1 May 2017 End date 18 August 2017 Hours (per week) 40
Microorganisms have been a source of catalysts used in a host of biotechnological applications. In the main these processes rely on using pure strains that have been screened to optimally produce the target compound. In this project we will investigate the effect of various strategies to promote enzyme production to degrade organic micropollutants present in wastewater. Our aim is to develop a new treatment technology for removing macro and micro organic pollutants from wastewater. Assemble experimental setup, design and conduct experiments, collect and analyse data, discuss results with project supervisor, and write and submit reports for feedback from project supervisor. Enrolled in a bachelor s degree in science or engineering related to environmental, chemical, biosystems, environmental chemistry, or related discipline. Be familiar with proteomics and metabolomics approaches, organic and physical chemistry, chemical analytical methods, statistical procedures, and good communication skills. The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) is managed through a unique partnership of Universities Canada, the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF), Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Canadian universities. This program is made possible with financial support from the Government of Canda, provincial governments and the private sector.
