NRECA TECHADVANTAGE 2014 TIME TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION & INTEROPERABILITY Steven Collier Milsoft Utility Solutions
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Interoperating the Various Technologies Inside Your Utility Interoperating With the Rest of the World
INTEROPERABILITY: The capability of a product or system whose interfaces are fully disclosed to interact and function with other products or systems, without any access or implementation restrictions.
INTEROPERABILITY: The capability of a product or system automatically to interact and function with other products or systems, without extra effort, time or expense on the part of the user.

Success Requires Mix and Match Hardware Telecommunications Applications On both sides of the meter!
The power grid itself is seamlessly integrated. The Smart Grid is not. The Internet should be our example.
HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION BEEN APPROACHED? End user brute force Constant IT intervention Single vendor Cooperating vendors System integrators APIs / SOA s
HOW SHOULD TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION BE APPROACHED? Industry Standards Open Systems Brand / Version Agnostic Mix and Match Out of the box Plug & Play
The Modern Grid Will Be Inseparable From the Internet TCP/IP
THE INTERNET = SMART GRID CONTROL PLANE Over the past 63 years, we met world needs for cheap and clean INFORMATION by building the INTERNET. Over the next 63 years, we will meet world needs for cheap and clean ENERGY by building the ENERNET. Robert Metcalfe... The Enernet book tour
"Our expectation is that this network will be 100 or 1,000 times larger than the Internet. If you think about it, some homes have Internet access, but some don't. Everyone has electricity access all of those homes could potentially be connected. Marie Hatter, VP Cisco Read more: _ html#ixzz1olvl7YEd
Technology Integration: Strategy Policies Plans
SHOP AND BUY CAREFULLY Choose only vendors who are willing to commit in writing to integrate with your existing systems. Choose vendors who have demonstrated integration with your existing systems.
Here is the language we put in our SCADA RFP. We put identical requirements in our IVR RFP (substituting system names as appropriate, of course). 4. The SCADA system will integrate seamlessly with the existing Cooper Cannon AMI system and MilSoft DisSPatch OMS via MultiSpeak. This may be accomplished through individual connections to OMS and AMI or through an Enterprise Service Bus. a. Bidder shall be an active member of the MultiSpeak initiative ( and shall demonstrate a culture of commitment to interoperability through MultiSpeak standards. b. All integration issues are the responsibility of the bidder and shall be provided at no additional cost to the Owner during the entire useful life of the Solution, regardless of any versioning changes. c. The proposed system shall be MultiSpeak compliant in all methods deemed necessary by Owner to operate per the integration points listed above, and the Vendor will be required to maintain and update its MultiSpeak compliances and certifications as the standards progress. d. Vendor will be responsible to add such future integration capabilities via MultiSpeak methods as may be required by the Owner to implement existing and future business processes that involve the Vendor's Solution. e. Vendor shall provide all MultiSpeak interoperability testing required by Owner, and shall provide Owner with copies of all assertion documentation related to such testing. f. Vendor shall work diligently with Owner's other solutions providers to assure all required interoperability via MultiSpeak until the exact sources of any failures are determined to the satisfaction of Owner, Vendor, and Owner's other solutions providers. g. Vendor agrees to reimburse Owner for all reasonable costs required for Owner's custom development necessary to provide integration per this section (regardless of who develops the custom integration) for any noncompliance with these interoperability requirements that is not remedied by the Vendor within six (6) months from the first date of written request by Owner for missing or failed integration capabilities that are the result of Vendor's failure to interoperate with Owner's other systems. i. Owner may, at its sole option, extend the six month deadline for remedy, provided that Vendor shows good faith effort to remedy the omission or failure. h. Vendor shall not be held responsible for failures of interoperability that result from failures of Owner's other systems (e.g., billing or outage management systems) to provide MultiSpeak methods required for interoperation. i. If Owner's other systems provide MultiSpeak interoperation under versions older than Vendor's, Vendor shall be responsible to provide compatible MultiSpeak methods.
SHOP AND BUY CAREFULLY Choose vendors who are willing to commit in writing to integrate with your future systems Choose vendors who use open platforms and industry standards
SHOP AND BUY CAREFULLY Don t Get Locked Into Proprietary, Closed System Hardware, Telecommunications, Applications. Technology has the shelf life of a banana! No single vendor or product line will be capable of doing everything that you will need.
