What business benefits can be achieved from data? Panel session led by Edna Nakati, Marketing Manager for Systems & Smart Water Metering Itron Eva Martínez Díaz Zohar Yinon Mike Bishop Zheng Yi Wu Manager for Smart Management Area - FCC Aqualia CEO - Hagihon the Jerusalem Region Water & Wastewater Utility Head of Operational Services - DCWW Welsh Water Ph.D., Bentley Fellow - Bentley Systems, Incorporated
SMART STEPS TOWARDS SMART WATER Hagihon Zohar Yinon, CEO
Hagihon: Profile Hagihon Ltd. Is Israel s largest, most experienced and advanced Municipal Water & Wastewater services utility. Established in 1996 and servicing Jerusalem and surrounding townships. Hagihon is fully owned by the municipalities served and is regulated by the Government of Israel (Israeli Water & Sewage Authority) 3
Hagihon: Profile 2 Water Network: 1350 km; Sewage Network: 1000 km; Drainage Network: 450 km, Treated Effluent Network: 35 km. Service Population: 24/7 Services to almost 1 million people; Total Service Area: 150 km2. Reservoir Capacity: 360,000 m 3, Peak Demand: 220,000 m 3 /day. Personal Consumption: 57.7 m 3 /year A growing modern infrastructure-rich city as well as ancient structures and underground systems 250 highly trained and qualified workers NRW: 10.5% overall, achieving 6% in developed sections of city, 105 DMA s and growing Altitude: meters, Climate: Desert to Alpine (Semi-Arid) 4
The Conventional Way of Repairing (Reported) Leaks Establish an Efficient 24/7 Call Center Maintain quick-response crews and equipment Repair Reported Leaks ASAP Sudden and Un-Announced water cut-offs to consumers Collateral and often insidious damage to roads and real estate Lifting asphalt, digging, with potential damage to infrastructure Rushed, low-quality repairs Expensive backfill and re-asphalting 5
New Technologies Applied at HaGihon Promote Optimization & Efficiency of Leak Repair Continuous on-line analytics of flow, pressure and water quality parameters at the DMA level allows, anomaly detection & alerts. Permanently installed acoustic sensors, provides early detection of hidden leaks. Innovative trenchless in-pipe leak repair provides an elegant means of plugging leaks in trial, but already obtained authorization of Ministry of Health. 6
Real Time Network Monitoring TaKaDu s solution collects, cleans and processes on line data from Hagihon s SCADA network. The information is analyzed read-time by the system, and is used to model the "normal" behavior of the network at any point in time. TaKaDu provides Hagihon with alerts when the behavior of the system deviates from normal, providing Early Warning on DMA level of potential water quality issues and other problems.
Acoustic Monitoring Of Water Network. Aquarius-Spectrum s technology provides Hagihon with an advanced tool for water network maintenance by early warning of leakages. Aquarius-Spectrum s fixed network of wireless acoustic sensors which already monitor nearly half the water distribution network and provide a complete up-to-date graphical representation of every point of failure, including history and statistics. This provides Hagihon's engineers with clear decision support information to optimize and synchronize maintenance activities thus enhancing efficiency. Leak location is displayed on Hagihon s GIS, creating daily updated maps of active leaks.
In-Pipe Trenchless Repair Technology Curapipe is a pioneering developer of a breakthrough trenchless (nodig) leak curing solution for automatically detecting and sealing leakage from within the pipe. Focused on Hagihon s water distribution network. Curapipe and Hagihon have now already gained approval of the Israeli Ministry of Health for innovative trenchless repair of small (4-8 ) pipelines. Hagihon is positioning Curapipe solution as a low cost alternative to classical water mains replacement/renewal.
Knowledge is Power: Smart Leak Repair Prior knowledge of (hidden) leaks allows optimization of Repair Procedures PLAN the repair CHOOSE the time ORGANIZE repair teams and equipment MITIGATE traffic and other public disruptions LOCATE and mark other infrastructure PINPOINT leak location to minimize time and costs IMPROVE customer relations by announcing planned water cutoffs 10
Knowledge is Power: Smart Leak Repair (II) TRACK small leaks and DECIDE when to repair UTILIZE future planned work on the section to repair small leaks Global Leakage London 2015 Integration of Real Time Leakage Monitoring with In-Pipe Trenchless Repair Technology 11
Fixed Water Network Monitoring using Acoustic Sensors and Advanced Analytic Software. GIS based Sensors placed every meters. Sensors activated every night for 10 seconds. Report via cellular connection. Software builds up a statistical probability, pointing to a true leak, and correlates data from adjacent sensors in order to locate leak Report of Current Leaks is generated every morning Aquarius data automatically generate a dynamic layer in HaGihon s GIS system, marking active leaks Report of various disruptions to be fixed such as noise-making meters, non-return, valves and even blocked pipes. 12
Smart Water Project To Do list based on Hagihon experience. Appoint capable Project Manager understanding field teams, engineering, GIS, information systems. Involve all key players in the planning. Develop SOP for pinpointing location and for repair of hidden leaks. Develop Dynamic GIS layer to display existing leaks. Develop SOP for replacing noise-making elements. Inform customers of private network leaks located by system. Utilize DMA anomaly analytics to validate and check on acoustic generated alerts. Check & review alerts against customer reports of visible leaks. Change the Disk of maintenance managers. Public relations. 13
Hagihon Maintenance Matrix Large Leak Medium Leak Small Leak NEW PIPE Repair Immediately Repair by Hidden Leak SOP Repair in Conjunction with planned Work MEDIUM AGE PIPE Repair Immediately Apply Cure-pipe or Repair in Conjunction with Planned Work Apply Curapipe OLD PIPE OR SECTION DUE TO BE REPLACED IN NEAR FUTURE Repair Immediately Apply Curapipe Apply Curapipe 14
Benefits Realized from On-Line Detection & Repair of Hidden Leaks Increased Lower NRW Reduced collateral damages. Important tool for improved maintenance and asset management higher standard repairs, lower costs. Improved Customer Relations more than 100 events fixed before public alert or complain to the call center in half a year. On-time replacement of malfunctioning (noisy) fittings. Mitigation of continued corrosion. 15
Current Status of Leak Detection System in HaGihon Full scale installation commenced in October sensors installed (of 2700 planned) 510 km s covered (of 900 planned) 80 hidden leaks reported; 52 repaired 22 private-network leaks discovered & customers informed 60 malfunctioning accessories revealed and replaced 3% drop in NRW in first area covered (reduction from 6%) Leaks still being repaired by DIGGING cure-a-pipe still in trial stage. 16
Summary - Putting All Insights Together is SMART 1. TaKaDu Analytics provide event alerts on DMA level including amount of water loss (cu. m/hr) 2. Aquarius alerts and locates hidden leaks 3. Aquarius and TaKaDu confirm leak repair and provide information on leak re-development. 4. Completely Trenchless NO-DIG Cure-a-Pipe provides an elegant tool for plugging leaks and will be monitored creating a Data bank which will support next steps of development. 5. All Data is interfaced to the GIS and SAP systems. 17
THANK YOU
