Using of ETIC System I Verarbeitung WDV-System I ETICS hard foam insulation boards using the bonding technique or the bonding and anchoring technique System properties Certified thermal insulation compound system with facade insulation boards from expanded polystyrene hard foam with blunt edges, step rabbet or groove and tongue. Depending on design, with rated thermal conductivity λ = 0,040, 0,035 or 0,032 W/(m K) in accordance with DIN V The insulation boards are bond on the surface and fixed additionally using ETICS anchors depending on the substrate conditions. The ETIC System I is an economical method for efficient thermal insulation and significant saving of energy expenses. In addition, it contributes to environmental protection, increases the living value of a building and optimizes the room climate. The facade insulation with ETICS hard foam insulation boards provides individual and flexible facade design options, ensures lasting protection and maintains the value of a building. According to General Technical Approvals (Allgemeine bauaufsichtlichen Zulassungen ABZ) issued by the competent building authorities with insulation material thickness up to 400 mm. Date: Using of ETIC System I Page 1 of 14
Rated thermal conductivity λ: 0,040, 0,035 or 0,032 W/(m K) according to DIN V , depending on type of insulation board Behavior in fire: schwer entflammbar B1 (flameretardant) > 100 mm generally and up to 300 mm, with fire protection measure normally inflammable B2 > 100 mm up to 400 mm without fire protection measures Insulation board format: 100 x 50 cm Insulation material thickness: up to 400 mm Insulation board types: W/(m K) ETICS Hard Foam Insulation Board 3576 blunt edges W/(m K) ETICS Hard Foam Insulation Board 3614 blunt edges, 3836 step rabbet, 3837 groove and tongue ETICS Rusticated Boards Type A 3823, Type B 3824 and Type C W/(m K) ETICS Hard Foam Insulation Board, gray Data Sheet 5v01 Field of Application For thermal insulation of existing and new buildings on stable, even, dry and load-bearing substrates. On brickwork and concrete with or without render up to a building height which permits the use of hardly inflammable construction materials as per the applicable building regulations, normally up to high-rise building limit. Use in areas exposed to splash water (height of approx. 30 cm) requires special measures (see Area exposed to splash water ). Can also be used on standard or generally approved board materials in wooden framework construction or prefabricated construction. System application Structural requirements Before implementation of the ETICS work, ensure that the brickwork / concrete no longer has a high moisture content, e.g. as a result of driving rain. If subsequent interior work with plaster or screed mortars is performed, ensure adequate ventilation. See also BFS Leaflet No. 21, Item 3.4 Building Moisture. Windows and exterior doors, covers, gutters, window sills, roller shutter boxes and shutter guide rails must have already been mounted. The layer thickness of the entire insulation must be taken into account when planning covers, window sills, window frames, roof overhangs, etc. For insulation on old buildings, the connections and details present such as window sills, rain pipes, exterior lighting, railings, ventilation grates, door bells, etc. must be completed correspondingly earlier. Substrate preparation The substrate must be stable, even, clean, firm, dry, loadbearing and free of efflorescences, sintered layers and separating agents. The substrate preparation must be adapted to the respective substrate conditions as well as the individual requirements. Chip away any coarse, protruding sections of mortar or concrete. The evenness of the substrate must comply with DIN Tolerances in building construction - Buildings, Table 3, Line 5, Limit values for evenness deviations on unfinished walls. Larger substrate unevennesses must be leveled mechanically or compensated with render in accordance with DIN V 18550, mortar group PII. Limited substrate unevennesses can be compensated with the adhesive layer. Check existing render for strength and cavities; check existing coatings for load-bearing capacity. Completely remove non-load-bearing renders and coatings. Prime substrates with Lacryl Deep Penetrating Primer ELF 595, as required. The compatibility of any existing coatings with the adhesive mortar must be assessed by an expert. Warning! Polystyrene hard form is attacked by solvents. Only solvent-free primers should therefore be used, if required. Using of ETIC System I Page 2 of 14
Lower system ending Classic mounting of the ETICS Starter Profile (Figure 1) Use ETICS Impact Screws 3546 as well as ETICS Starter Profile Connectors 3776 and ETICS Starter Corner Profiles 3777 to affix the ETICS Starter Profile 3770 in accordance with the insulation board thickness such that it is flush. Limited unevennesses of the substrate can be compensated with ETICS Spacers Ending with ETICS Starter Profile As an alternative variant of a recessed base connection without thermal bridges, the Qju Fixing Brackets can be used with the ETICS Base Joint Profile. More information on this variant can be found in the Data Sheet ETICS Base Joint Profile Adhesive application (Figure 2) Apply 3550, VZ 3600 or ETICS Adhesive and Reinforcement Mortar L 3500 on the ETICS hard foam insulation boards, either across the whole surface or using the so-called edge-beading lump method so that an adhesive surface of at least 40 % is reached. Alternatively, the adhesive can also be applied in serpentine strips. 60 % of the surface must be covered by the adhesive mortar. If the ETIC System I is used on board materials in wooden framework constructions or prefab constructions, ETICS Poly Adhesive 3574 may or must be used depending on the substrate. The material is applied on the whole surface of the substrate or the back of the insulation board using a notched trowel. When applying a top layer of Ceramic Coverings, follow the instructions in the Data Sheet 5kb1 Ceramic Coverings. Insulation board bonding (Figure 3) Mount the ETICS hard form insulation boards to the pretreated substrate from bottom to top in a running bond pattern with a precise fit such that they are flush, even and offset-free. When mounting the insulation boards, ensure tightly abutting joint areas. Unavoidable joints and gaps (> 2 mm) must be sealed sufficiently with a similar type of insulation material such that no reinforcement plaster can penetrate. For example, gaps up to max. 5 mm can be filled with PUR Filler Foam Due to the permissible dimensional tolerances of the insulation boards, increased gaps must be expected with increasing insulation layer thickness. These must be sealed as described. No adhesive mortar may penetrate into the insulation board joints. Dovetailing of the insulation boards (offset joints) must be implemented at all external building corners. Alternatively, the insulation boards can also be mounted without corner dovetailing. In this case, the insulation boards must be full-surface bonded together in the overlapping area (continuous vertical joint) over the entire thickness with Qju Adhesive Foam 3700 or PUR Filler Foam As from an insulation layer thickness > 20 cm, a full-surface bonding over the entire thickness of the insulation boards with Qju Adhesive Foam 3700 or PUR Filler Foam 3555 must be realized at the exterior building outer corners, regardless of the mounting type. At facade openings, e.g. windows and doors, do not continue the vertical insulation board joints across the opening s corner, if possible; instead, mount the insulation boards in an overlapping manner (notched out). Horizontal joints are permissible as long as a proper diagonal and interior corner reinforcement is ensured. Cross joints must be avoided. Any projecting board edges and unevennesses must be sanded level over a large area using a sanding board. Using of ETIC System I Page 3 of 14
Anchoring Depending on the condition of the substrate, it may be necessary to fix the ETICS hard foam insulation boards using ETICS anchors (structural or statically relevant anchoring). Additional anchoring is not required for substrates with a tear-off strength of at least 0.08 N/mm². This strength can generally be assumed for uncoated, mineral substrates, e.g. brickwork according to DIN 1053 and concrete according to DIN 1045, as well as on board materials in wooden frame structures. System anchoring is a complex topic that is described in detail in separate data sheets. Detailed information on anchor selection and positioning adapted to ETIC System IV is clearly presented in the Data Sheet 5d01 Anchoring ETIC System I. When applying a top layer of ceramic coverings, follow the instructions on anchoring in the Data Sheet 5kb1 Ceramic Coverings. Reinforcement (Figure 4) After sufficient hardening of the insulation board bonding (after 3 days at the earliest), the bonded insulation boards are ready for application of the next coat or the next work step. Corner reinforcement On all corners and edges, e.g. exterior building outer corners, window and door reveals, plumb and flush corner reinforcement must be implemented before the surface reinforcement. For this purpose, use ETICS Mesh Corner Protection Profile 3763, ETICS Vario Mesh Corner Protection 3507, ETICS Aluminum Corner Protection Profile 3787 or ETICS Mesh Corner, special Diagonal / Interior corner reinforcement Additional diagonal and interior corner reinforcement must be implemented in all corner areas of facade openings, e.g. windows, doors and niches. We recommend using the ETICS Diagonal Reinforcement Arrow 3713 or the ETICS Diagonal Reinforcement Angle 3692 for this purpose. Surface Reinforcement Apply the reinforcement plaster to the entire surface of the bonded hard foam insulation boards. Lay ETICS Reinforcement Fiber Mesh 3797 (free of bubbles and folds) into the wet reinforcement layer such that the individual mesh strips overlap by approx. 10 cm, then cover it weton-damp with another layer of reinforcement plaster. Detailed information on reinforcement structure can be found in the Data Sheet ETICS Reinforcement Fiber Mesh 3797 and in the data sheets for the reinforcement plasters. The following reinforcement plasters can be used: ETICS Reinforcement Plaster ZF-SiL 3585 ETICS Reinforcement Plaster ZF-R VZ 3600 ETICS Adhesive and Reinforcement Mortar L 3500 For thick reinforcement layer (6 7 mm), use ETICS Adhesive and Reinforcement Mortar L 3500 in combination with ETICS Mesh Corner Profile DS 3686, ETICS Window Joint Profile 3707 and ETICS Click-On Profile During implementation, follow the additional instructions in the data sheets of the products mentioned above. When applying a top layer of Ceramic Coverings, follow the instructions for reinforcement in the Data Sheets 5kb1 Ceramic Coverings and ETICS Reinforcement Fiber Mesh CT 3714 (Ceramic Coverings). Using of ETIC System I Page 4 of 14
Top coat (Figure 5) After the reinforcement layer has dried sufficiently (at least 3 days), the system top coat can be applied, i.e. either Rausan KR/R (org. bound render) Silicone Render KR/R Silcosil KR/R (siliconereinforced render) Silicate Render KR/R Light Mineral Render KR/R/G Flat facing bricks or Ceramic Coverings Depending on the combination or reinforcement plaster and top coat, an intermediate coat may be necessary. For colored coating of ETIC systems, a lightness reference value (LRV) of 20 must be observed unless additional measures are taken. Color shades with an LRV < 20 can be realized with the Brillux SolReflex system. Please consult the SolReflex Colors of Any Darkness Level on ETICS Brochure and the Data Sheet 5tsr. Reinforcement layers extending into the soil must be protected with ETICS Multiflex Follow the instructions in Data Sheet Connections and joints System connections to e.g. windows and doors must be properly implemented with connection profiles or sealing tape depending on the individual requirements. Use ETICS Window Joint Profile, special+ 3748, an ETICS Window Joint Profile 3707 or PF 3820 or ETICS Sealing Tape 3796 for this purpose. For windows flush with the facade or positioned in front of it, the Brillux Consulting Service should always be contacted with regard to the exact creation of the connections, especially in the region of the window sills. For connection to roof soffits, use ETICS Sealing Tape 3796 and, depending on the roof structure, also use ETICS Roof Ventilation Profile Required expansion joints must be created with ETICS Expansion Joint Profile G 3805 or ETICS Starter Profile 3770 in combination with ETICS Sealing Tape Data Sheet 5v01 Mounting of third party components Brillux offers a large number of mounting anchors for the subsequent attachment of third party components such as railings, exterior lights, shutter guide rails, signs, advertisements, canopies, shades, awnings, shutters, etc. while avoiding thermal bridges as well as compressive and tensile stresses. These must be properly mounted before or during the bonding of the insulation boards. A selection guide and detailed information on mounting anchoring as well as proper application can be found in the Mounting Anchoring Chapter in the Internet at and in the individual data sheets. Area exposed to splash water Use ETIC system VI for insulation in areas exposed to splash water (up to approx. 30 cm above the ground surface). With the special ETICS Base and Perimeter Insulation Boards, this system is particularly suited for this application as well as for insulation that extends into the ground. For more information on how to apply the system, refer to Using of ETIC System VI Data Sheet 5d06. Using of ETIC System I Page 5 of 14
Fire protection information The reaction of ETIC systems to fire is influenced by the system components, such as insulation material type and thickness, reinforcement plaster, and top coat, as well as by the structural design of openings, components and detail connections. In the planning and implementation of ETIC systems with ETICS hard foam insulation boards, e.g. the following aspects must be taken into consideration in order to maintain a reaction to fire of class B1, schwer entflammbar (flame retardant), in accordance with DIN 4102: For insulation material thickness > 10 cm: Lintel design on building openings with ETICS mineral wool lamella strips; Alternatively, it is also possible to create a surrounding fire barrier Integration of window frames located in front of the facade Creation of expansion joints Additional installation of ETIC systems (for a total insulation material thickness > 10 cm) Integration and over-insulation of roller shutter boxes and blinds Systems on board materials in wooden frame structures According to General Technical Approval No. Z , ETICS hard foam insulation boards (up to an insulation material thickness of 200 mm) in combination with ETICS Poly Adhesive 3574 can be bonded on the following standardized (or approved by construction authorities) wooden structure board materials: organically bound wooden panels, cement and gypsum bound flat hardboards, gypsum fiber boards and fiber cement boards. Up to an insulation material thickness of 100 mm, the system is schwer entflammbar B1 (flame retardant), in the area > 100 up to 200 mm normal entflammbar (normally inflammable). For additional anchoring on the wooden material or gypsum fiber boards, use ETICS Screw Fixtures STR-H 3730, if necessary. The adhesives, reinforcement materials and top coats listed in the following tables are used for building up the system. Use of Ceramic Coatings on board materials in wooden constructions is not permitted. In general: Bridging of fire walls Protective coating in the splash water area The entire topic of fire protection, including implementation descriptions and diagrams, is described in detail in the Technical Data Sheet 5b04 ETICS Fire Protection. Additional ETIC Systems ETIC System Qju Premium insulation system based on EPS hard foam insulation boards with adhesive foam bonding. Especially efficient and advantageous ETIC system that makes use of organically bound reinforcement plasters and top coat renders or flat facing bricks as the final coating. The special advantages of these elements are perfectly complemented by the revolutionary Qju fixation technique. Additional information on system implementation can be found in the Data Sheet 5v00 Using of ETIC System Qju. ETIC system II ETICS hard foam insulation boards with mechanical fixation (rail system) If the substrate preparation would require a disproportionate amount of work, e.g. due to the removal of non-load-bearing coatings or old plasters, ETIC System II can be used. The mechanical fixation bridges nonload-bearing surface layers and can compensate substrate unevennesses of up to 3 cm. For more information on how to apply the system, refer to the Data Sheet 5v02 Using of ETIC System II. ETIC System III, IV and V Nicht brennbare (nonflammable) exterior wall insulation If Nichtbrennbarkeit (nonflammability) is required for the exterior wall insulation, such as for high-rises and many public buildings, the system solution is found in nicht brennbar A2 (non-flammable) ETIC systems on a mineral basis: ETIC System III Facade insulation with mineral wool insulation boards. ETIC System IV Facade insulation with mineral wool lamella insulation boards. ETIC System V Mineral wool insulation boards with mechanical fixation (rail system).
