Geographic spread of CDEMA PS s

1. Objectives q Explain Comprehensive Disaster Management q Discuss the meaning of Urban Seismic Risk Reduction to establish a common understanding q Examine the trend of urbanization in the Caribbean q Identify Key Areas of Concern q Discuss Achievements within the CDM Framework q Discuss Next Steps to include opportunities

2. Comprehensive Disaster Management Explained Recovery and Rehabilita3on Phases of Disaster Risk Management Mi3ga3on and Preven3on Response Preparedness What is CDM? } CDM is the management of all hazards } through all phases of the disaster management cycle } by all peoples public and private sectors, all segments of civil society and the general popula3on } CDM involves risk reduc3on & management and } integra3on of vulnerability assessment into the development planning process

3. Definitions of Disaster Risk Reduction & Urban Seismic Risk Reduction DRR The concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematic efforts to analyze and manage the causal factors of disasters, including through reduced exposure to hazards, lessened vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the environment, and improved preparedness for adverse events (UNISDR 2009) USRR Seismic Risk refers to the probability of damage from EQs to the built environment Urban Seismic Risk is a subset of Seismic Risk and looks at issues specific to cities Urban Seismic Risk Reduction will embrace the tenets associated with DRR

4. Trend of Urbanization in the Caribbean A. Growing trend of urban centres in the Caribbean: i. Two-thirds or 70% of the population live in urban centres ii. Bahamas and Cayman Islands lead in growing urban centres iii. Majority of cities are located in flone-prone coastal zones iv. Urban areas have high percentages of informal and unplanned development B. Increasing vulnerabilities of residents & businesses existing in these spaces i. Levels of exposure being made worst due to the effects of climate change

LONG TERM GOAL Integra3ng the concept of resilience Disaster Risk Reduc3on Linked to Sustainable Development Safer more resilient and sustainable States Secure Livelihoods Vulnerability Addressed Lives saves property damage reduced

5. Key Areas of Concern Reduced living standards This is a reality we face today and the effects of climate change forces us to intensify our efforts Pressure on limited response capaci3es Potential for Interruption of Sustainable Development Increased No of Exposed Persons & Assets Environmental Degrada3on

6. Achievements through the CDM Framework Comprehensive Disaster Management Strategy Priority Areas Priority 1 National DM Plans include functional annexes to address response to seismic hazards Priority 2 Development and use* of Seismic Risk Maps Priority 3 Development of standards to guide use of seismic risk information in key sectors & development of risk profiles Priority 4 Development of standards to facilitate community risk assessment & profiles

7. Additional Achievement PEPSSC RTWG Developing benchmark to guide (re) integra3on of risk into development planning processes Increase investment in risk resilience (Seismic & Hydro-met) Reduce losses & exposure

8. Next Steps Increase Advocacy Forge or strengthen partnerships & governance mechanisms to advance advocacy efforts Increase public awareness Combine efforts and resources to raise awareness among the many publics Facilitate greater use & integration of science Promote opportunities to generate more research & use of findings.
